Daniel C. Von Seggern

Daniel Caryl Von Seggern passed away surrounded by family on May 1st, 2023 at the age of 79.  Daniel, better known as Danny or Dan to his family and friends, was born on January 7th, 1944 to Donald and Marian (Van Lent) Von Seggern in Emerson, NE.  Danny was the eldest of seven children and attended country school and graduated from Wisner High School in 1962.  Their father passed away when he was just 19 years old in 1963.  When Danny was 20 he lived with his mother, (who was pregnant at the time with his sister Lynette) and siblings Ronnie, Cynthia, Terry, and Steve while working at a cattle feedlot in Wisner, NE.

In December of 1965 Dan joined the US Navy where he would serve the next four years until 1969.  He would eventually move to Indiana and come back to Nebraska living in various places like Beemer, Grand Island, York, and finally settling in Lincoln.  He retired from the Nebraska State Patrol office in 2006 as a scale technician for their carrier enforcement division.

Dan loved to be outside.  Whether he was grilling outside for his family, simply enjoying an occasional beer on the patio with his wife, or playing with his grandchildren he was often outside.  More often than not in his later years he would be known to be in his garage of many treasures and hidden “papa gems.”  He was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed hunting as well.  He really loved fishing, from the bank or the boat, wherever the catfish were biting.  He spent time in his younger years traveling to his cousins in Cody, NE even taking his wife Nadine on many deer hunting trips.  What he liked to call “God’s country.”  His son Daniel said “There was no road, ditch, or hill he wouldn’t take to chase down a coyote.”  So many memories were made with family and friends over the years during his hunting excursions.  Or even coming home from a family trip.  I myself can remember being woke up from sleeping in the backseat of his old brown Chevy truck from an abrupt stop on the side of the road as he reached above me as i opened my sleepy eyes to see him grab a rifle from his gun rack to jump out of the truck to hunt down whatever random pheasant or thing it was that he saw that evening, lol.

Dan was known for many things.  A hard worker, a loyal friend, someone you could always depend on.  A notepad and pen he always kept in his shirt pocket for various notes.  Keeping Doralee’s stats from her softball games or teaching Angela how to keep track of the mileage in her car for example.  Or during the Christmas season how we all anticipated his famous fudge and popcorn balls.  More than anything though he was known for the love he had for his family.  We could all always call on him whenever we needed him for any and everything and he would be right there in a blink of an eye.  There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his family.  Dan loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending hours playing with them.  He built pinewood derby cars with them, even building a track for them they could practice racing their cars on to help them to bring home the trophies!  You could find him attending one of their softball, baseball, or soccer games.  He could be found playing in a pile of leaves in the front yard or taking time out to wrestle  changing a tire.  He might have even been caught snuggled up with one of them napping in his chair in the living room snoring away a time or fifty.

Dan was survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Nadine. His children Kathy (Mike), Daniel, Angela, Doralee, Scott (Sharon), and Laura (Ron).  His grandchildren Grace, Noah, Travis, Rilee, Kilee, Christyan, Casey (Drew), Joey (Bobbi Jo), Chelsey (Riley), Cam, Chad (Heather), Heather, Shelton, Dani, Laura Gene (Tanner), Patrick, and Becky (Trent). As well as 13 great grandchildren his sister Cynthia (Aaron), brother Terry (Barb), and sister Lynette, and numerous nieces and nephews, and close family friends Joe and Mary Lenser and daughters.

We will have a memorial service for Dan on Saturday May 13th from 1pm-4pm at the Waverly Community Center located at 11120 N 141st St Waverly, NE 68462 people can come back to Mom and Dad’s afterwards. There will be a short service and lunch provided with time to share memories and socialize. We look forward to seeing you there to remember Dad’s life and share the love we all deeply have for him and to support one another in this time of grief. The Von Seggern Family
