Donna Marie (Ziegler) McElvain was born January 17, 1953, in Holdrege, Nebraska. She passed away Monday, September 5th, 2022 at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the only child of Elva I. (Schnuerle) and Robert K. Ziegler.

Donna grew up on a farm east of Holdrege. She began her formal education as a member of the first all-day, one-semester Kindergarten class at Funk School. She attended Funk School through 8th grade, and continued on to complete grades 9-12 at Holdrege Junior and Senior High schools. With the surname Ziegler, she was the last member of the class of 1971 to cross the stage and receive her diploma.

She was united in marriage with Richard (Dick) Robert McElvain on August 12, 1973 at the United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska.

Donna knew she wanted to be a nurse for as long as she could remember, and she started her nursing career as an aide at Phelps Memorial Health Center while in high school. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing in 1975, and later received her Master’s of Science in Nursing in 1993. Her career as a registered nurse spanned 43 years in a variety of roles. She retired from the faculty of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing, Lincoln Division, in 2018.

Richard and Donna raised their family in Holdrege, where they were also active in school and community organizations including Trinity Evangelical Free Church. Their door was always open, and one never knew how many faces might be around the dinner table when their sons were in high school.

In 2004, Richard and Donna moved to Lincoln and became active members of Lincoln Berean Church. After they both retired, the couple traveled to The British Isles in 2018, and Israel in 2019 where Donna was baptized in the Jordan River.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard McElvain, sons David (Micayla) McElvain of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Duane (Krisann) McElvain of Madison, Wisconsin, grandson Matthew, and close family friend Michelle Tafoya. She will also be greatly missed by her sisters- and brothers-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, and many more family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elva and Robert.

Rosemary Teresa Morrison

featured image

Rosemary Morrison passed away on the evening of June 3rd, 2022. She passed surrounded by family and in the home that her and her husband Steve Morrison put many hours of love into.

Rosemary was a natural cook and caretaker to Bonnie and many others. Her kitchen often became the site of food experimentation, where her grandchildren took her runza recipe and ran wild with it. Frequently given the title “saint,” many flowed in and out of her home as readily as she showed them unwavering generosity and adoration. She loved deeply and exhausted all means necessary to care for those around her. A room always seemed more full with her in it.

As early as she was able to stir up trouble, Rosemary was as tough as nails. She had been quoted regularly saying “if the dog bites you, well you better bite it back.” She drove fast, turned back schoolhouse clocks, and in a leather jacket, you could mistake her easily for Joan Jett.

Rosemary was an extraordinary artist. She covered four walls in her basement with cartoon drawings, created beautiful quilts inspired by children’s books, and taught her children and their children how to create. She was quick to create a gallery wall of all the doodles her grandkids demanded to be adorned in a frame.

Rosemary loved to relax on her swing, spoil dogs, and arguably spoil her family even more. She will be remembered as the person you could always go to, a calm and constant presence, and one funny lady. Her compassion, words of wisdom, and attitude toward life will not be lost on future generations.

She is survived by husband Steve Morrison; children Tim (Shawn) Morrison and Gretchen (TJ) Jolliffe; grandchildren Hayden, Erek, Hannah, and Emma Morrison and Jereth and Jack Jones; sisters Joan Cappuccio, Barbara Curfman, Kathleen Wells, Susan (Greg) Bischof; and many nieces and nephews. Rosemary is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Elizabeth Whitnney; her sisters Mary Shanahan and Patty Bartels; her brothers Jim, Warren, Tom, and Phillip Whitney; and grandson Avery Jones.
