During her childhood she and her family moved to Nebraska after her father passed away and her mother remarried, with her family eventually settling in Seward. She attended Seward Public Schools. She married Burton L. Brinkman (originally from Ann Arbor, MI and long-time resident of Seward, NE later in his life) on December 19, 1959 in Lincoln, Nebraska at a chapel at Lincoln Air Force Base, where Burton was stationed at the time.

Bertha was a resident of Homestead Rehabilitation Center (now Brookside Rehabilitation Center) of Lincoln at the time of her passing. Her prior residence for 5 years was at Premier Estates of Crete (formerly Crete Manor), which was a nursing home located in Crete, NE that closed in 2019. Prior to residing in nursing homes, Bertha lived most of her later life in Lincoln.

She enjoyed playing bingo, going shopping, talking about her new outfits, decorating cookies, and group activities. During parts of her later life she belonged to local senior citizen groups. She was a long-time Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan dating back to the 1950s, a time when Nebraska had several losing seasons. She remained a fan for the rest of her life, through the rise of Nebraska to its preeminence during the Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne coached years and all years after that. She was a loyal fan.

She had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed being around people. She was loved by her family and friends. She will be missed.

Survivors include her daughter Deborah Flock of Lincoln, her son Terry Brinkman of South Lyon, Michigan, her sister Mary (Denny) Hartman of Seward, her nephew Jay (Brenda) Hartman of Seward, her nephew Todd (Julie) Hartman of Seward, her niece Cori Bennett of Wichita, KS, her niece Stacy (Patrick) Jambe of Sanford, FL, and her nephew Justin (Cory) Hartman of Seward.

Dorothy Lillian Bunner

Dorothy Lillian (Grigsby) Bunner, known as Dotty, passed away in her sleep on October 28, 2020. Born April 28, 1935 to David and Opal (Schwemley) Grigsby, Dotty was a native to Wray, Colorado; the Grigsby family was one of Wray’s early pioneers. Dotty always recalled with fondness the years she spent growing up in Wray.

Leaving Wray, she went to university at Colorado State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education. Dotty married her High School sweetheart, Richard O Bunner, known as Dick.

After Dick received his Master’s from Penn State University, the family traveled around the country where Dick was posted working for Weyerhaeuser. Dick and Dotty added two children to their family: daughter, Katherine L (Bunner) Hoover, and, son, David A Bunner. Dotty also added an elementary degree. So over the years she occasionally taught at both elementary and High School.

An exciting part of her life was living overseas in Indonesia and Australia where Dick worked. Travel was always an important part of Dotty’s life and something she enjoyed a great deal. One of her favorite trips was going to Ireland with her husband. Her grandchildren remember how she imparted the importance of traveling to expand ones view of the world.

Dotty was a 68 year member of the P.E.O. sisterhood. For many years the family moved every couple of years, but Dotty was always able to find a chapter to welcome her to town. She did serve as the State President for Arkansas P.E.O., while living in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. She felt blessed by all the women she’d known.

Dotty settled in Lincoln Nebraska to be near her daughter in 2015. And while there were no more big trips for Dotty, she still enjoyed being close to family and sharing time together.

Dotty was preceded in death by her parents, sister, husband, and one of her grandsons. She is survived by her two children, son-in-law, and seven of her grandchildren.

Service to be held in the future in Wray, Colorado.

Douglas “Doug” Dale Boydston

featured image

Douglas D. (Woody) Boydston was born Feb. 11, 1956 to Cloyd and Arla (Schoenleber)
Boydston in Scottsbluff, NE, and passed away peacefully Oct. 17, 2020, in Seward, NE, from
complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Doug was a longtime resident of Milford, NE and was employed as a machinist at the Tenneco
plant in Seward for 30 years.

Doug spent his childhood years in Weeping Water and Walthill, NE. Doug was an
all-conference offensive end at Walthill High School. His senior year he averaged 13.7 yards
per reception. He played “iron man” i.e. – in several games he was the top receiver and had the
most defensive tackles, also! He did it all at 160 lbs. He was a member of the National Honor
Society. He was also part of the Homecoming court beginning his freshmen year and won music
awards on baritone horn.

Doug began working at an early age, delivering newspapers, mowing lawns, working at local
grocery stores, and a manufacturing plant before graduating from Walthill High School in 1974.
He was employed at Stephenson’s School Supply warehouse during his college years and was
soon promoted to warehouse manager, where he went by the nickname “Woody.” Doug
graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in
Agriculture.

In 1987, Doug resigned his job to attend Southeast Community College in Milford. Doug
received awards in his program for Outstanding Math Student and Outstanding Student of the
Quarter. He was a semi-finalist for the Milford campus “Who’s Who Among Students Program.“
In 1989, Doug graduated with honors for scholastic excellence with an Associate of Applied
Science Degree in Machine Tool and Design Technology, Diemaker Option.

Doug was an avid motorcyclist, loved music, and watching classic movies. Doug held a firm
sense of right and wrong and fairness (which led to often helping the underdog in a situation), a
love for long motorcycle rides (as well as fast ones!) on his Harley’s and other road bikes, and
the drive and determination to change his life by returning to school and beginning a new,
successful career path.

Doug is survived by his mother, Arla Boydston of Wahoo, NE; sisters Jacque Springer (Tim),
Decatur, NE, and Cheryl Hansen (John M.), Omaha, NE, brother, Rick Boydston (Leslie),
Grandview, WA, niece, Christine Kleiner (Lewis), Omaha, NE, nephews, Nathan Hansen
(Amanda), Omaha, NE, Nick Boydston (Whitney), Bothell, WA, and Andy Boydston, Seattle,
WA, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Doug is preceded in death by his
father, Cloyd Boydston; grandparents Henry and Gladys (McReynolds) Boydston and John and
Dallas (Weaver) Schoenleber; and infant niece Elizabeth Springer.

A graveside service is planned for Oct. 31, 10:30 am, at the Cedar Hill United Methodist Church
Cemetery, located east of Ceresco, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Tabitha
Hospice and SE Community College-Milford.
