Janet M. Day
Janet Maxine Day (Beachler) of Lincoln, passed from this world on Sunday (2/20/2022). She was 90 years old, born 6/13/1931 in Chicago, Illinois. Janet was a genuine trailblazer her entire life. She was the first female Animal Husbandry Major at the University of Nebraska, a member of the Block and Bridle Club, an active member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, and she also established the Janet Beachler Scholarship Fund to help students In Veterinary Medicine to follow in her footsteps. She was preceded in death by both her parents (Everett and Maxine Beachler) and her husband of 56 years, retired Air Force Major Jay Hamilton Day (10/24/2008). She is survived by her children; John Day of Lincoln; Jeffery Day and his wife Lyndi of Charlotte, NC; Jayne Day of Madera CA; Joanne Day of Austin, TX, Julie Day-Tsou and her husband Marc Tsou of Chesapeake, VA; Jason Day of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; countless “adopted” kids including very special family friend Barbara Frank. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral and Celebration of Life Will on Saturday 3/26/2022 2:00pm at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Lincoln. Paul Ray Smith
Paul Ray Smith, “Pauly” to his friends, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Saturday, February 19, at Tabitha Journey House Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul was born on July 19, 1953 in St. Joseph Missouri to Billy Ray Smith and Ruth Irene Kreiner Smith Gustafson. He grew up in Greenwood, going to grade school there and attended High School at Ashland Greenwood High School in Ashland, NE. He worked as a welder at Progressive Rail in Lincoln, NE among other jobs until he became disabled. He was very grateful of the fact that he gave his life to Jesus Christ the summer of 2019 and began attending Indian Hills Community Church and grew in his faith there attending Sunday School, morning and evening services and mid-week bible studies until the past few months as it became more difficult to attend. He is survived by his son, Shawn and Jodi Collier of Lincoln, NE, daughters, Chassity and Daniel McAtee of Frisco, Texas, and Amanda and Tony Tran of Lincoln, NE. Grandchildren, Morgan Marie Collier, Harley Youngblood, Rion Collier, Angel Foster and Rayne Forbes. Seth and Sammi McAtee, Alexis, Connor and Rylee McAtee. Justin, Brianna and Brock Abbink. Great Grandchildren, Jacob Collier, Jaquan and Jemius Youngblood, and Mercy McAtee. Sisters, Sandy and Steve Frahm of Ashland, NE and Candy Gustafson of Lincoln, NE. Good friends, Stan Malin and son Michael of Lincoln and Pat Krontz of of Lincoln, NE. Paul has been cremated and his wishes were no funeral and to have his ashes scattered by his close friends and immediate family at a favorite fishing spot at a future date. Paul’s favorite scripture is Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. Mary Jo Liska
Mary Jo (Marge Hurt) Liska, daughter of John W. and Lucy J. (Policky) Hurt, was born near Dwight, Nebraska on August 18, 1940, and passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on February 18, 2022, at the age of 81. Mary Jo attended country school and then graduated from Dwight Assumption Catholic High School in 1959. Mary Jo went on to further her education and graduated from the La Parent Beauty School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and received her license in cosmetology in 1960. On December 30, 1961, she was married to Donald “Don” Liska at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Lincoln, NE. Two children were born to them; Linda and Brian. From Lincoln, Mary Jo and Don took off for new adventures while traveling coast to coast throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico with Don’s career in telecommunications. Mary Jo was a homemaker, and ran her own daycares for several years in both Kingfisher, Oklahoma and Bloomfield, NE. She also worked for the Bloomfield, NE Community Schools for 15 years and for Wulf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion, NE for seven years. Mary Jo enjoyed being out in nature her whole life. It thrilled her to see pheasants, rabbits, deer, geese and ducks while caring for the family’s land by Dwight, NE. Throughout her life she got to enjoy camping and fishing with her family. She also loved to travel. Mary Jo and Don enjoyed traveling to many of the National Parks throughout the United States. As anyone who knew Mary Jo, she could make a friend anywhere she went. Mary Jo was also an avid gardener; both vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed canning and freezing vegetables and fruits. Mary Jo also loved her Catholic faith and served on numerous church committees and Altar Societies throughout the United States in the parishes where she and Don lived. She also taught CCD classes for several years in Bloomfield, NE. But, most of all, Mary Jo loved making many special memories by spending time with her family. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents John W. and Lucy J. Hurt; her husband, Donald “Don” Liska; sister Adeline Kozisek and her husband Frank; brother Chuck Hurt and brother Richard Hurt; brother-in-law Eugene Liska, Sr. and his wife Rose and brother-in-law Richard Divis. Survivors cherishing her memory include her daughter Linda Liska, Seward, NE, and son Brian and his wife Jannine Liska, Seward, NE; granddaughters Jennifer (Samuel) Kophamer, Sarasota, FL and Samantha Liska, Seward, NE; sister-in-law Jeanette Divis, Seward, NE; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Shona Kristine Klusman
Shona Kristine (Sorensen) Klusman (77 years old) passed away on February 10, 2022, of natural causes. Shona was born in Omaha to Zola M. (Lawler) and Marius K. Sorensen on August 7, 1944. Shona was a retired LPN. She was a loving and caring person and was there for anyone who needed help and encouragement. After retirement she worked for Lincoln Public Schools as a Grandmother at Clinton Elementary School. Many was the time when Shona would be out and about and hear, “Grandma Shona” from one of the many students she had the pleasure working with. She was an aunt and great-aunt and was affectionately known as ‘Nonie’ by all who knew and loved her. Shona was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, a sister and brother, and husband, James Klusman. She is survived by a brother, Howard Sorensen, and sister, Donna (Sorensen) Bales. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 am on February 24, 2022, at Havelock United Methodist Church, 4140 N 60th St, Lincoln, NE 68507, Pastor Todd Karges officiating.
