Steven Wesley Sloggett

Steven Wesley Sloggett, a longtime resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, died on November 24, 2021 at Bryan Medical Center East Campus after a short battle with cancer.  He was born on February 27, 1957 in McCook, Nebraska to Gerald and Ruth Sloggett. He was the third of their six children.

Steve grew up in Broken Bow, Nebraska, where he played sports, worked at the local bakery and helped to run the Dairy Queen owned by his family. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1975 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he received a BA in psychology in 1983. In Lincoln, he worked for LOMR, Lincoln Parks and Recreation, and the Community Mental Health Center-Adams Street. In 2000, Steve returned to school at Southeast Community College in Milford to study computer programming. After graduating in 2001, he worked for Assurity Life until his retirement in late 2020.

Steve lived for 40 years with his longtime love, Betty Gayley. Throughout those years, he enjoyed bowling on a number of city league teams, being a generous friend in his neighborhood and community, caring for his lawn and gardens, being a blood donor, and spending time with family. On November 19, 2021, Steve and Betty were married.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Sloggett and his great-nephew, Dylan Dzingle. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his mother, Ruth Sloggett; sister, Joni (David) Ritchie; brother, Michael (Kate) Sloggett; brother,  Craig (Annette) Sloggett; brother, Kent (Wendy) Sloggett; and sister, Jeanette (Doug) Birnie; Betty’s children, James (Kathy) Gayley and Donna (Steve) Spearman; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, 6 great-grandchildren, and 15 nieces and nephews.

Memorial service to be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1144 M St, Lincoln, NE 68508, on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. The service will be livestreamed here.

Barbara J. Skiff-Stites

Born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 17, 1932 to parents G.W. and Marjory (Drahos) McGavren; passed away on November 24, 2021.

Barbara moved to Grand Island, NE in 1942, where she graduated from G.I. High school in 1950. She then attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. She married her husband Ted Skiff in 1951 and they had four children; Peggy Jo, Ted C., Stacy, and Sandra. She later married Rich Stites in 1993.

Barbara is survived by her husband Rich Stites, daughters Stacy Skiff and Sandy Crawford, Son Ted. C. Skiff, and Randy Stites. Also her four grandchildren, Jennifer Tapia, Brian Skiff, Kelly Reames, and Hannah Skiff; and five great grandchildren, Julien, Janelle, Aidyn, Elyas, and Emberlyn, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted J. Skiff, daughter Peggy Skiff, and brother Bill McGavren, Jr.

As per Barbara’s wishes there will be no funeral service. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Joel Paul MacDermid

Joel Paul MacDermid, 46, of Lincoln, NE died of Covid-19 on November 22, 2021. He was born February 5, 1975.

Joel was a huge Green Bay Packers fan, enjoyed working on cars, traveling, loved the outdoors, camping, bonfires, grilling and smoking meat.

Joel is survived by his daughter, Isabella  MacDermid of Mapleton, ND, his lifetime long best friend, Sherry Underwood, his bonus children Alyssa Geiszler, Makayla Geiszler, Jakob Underwood and Logan Underwood, all of Lincoln, NE. He is also survived by his mother Rita Macdermid of Everette, WA and his brother, Matthew Macdermid of Fargo, ND.

He is preceded in death by his father and grandmother.

Services will be held at a later date due to covid-19.
