My heart aches to learn of Judge Kopf’s passing. I truly enjoyed working for him in the Federal Judiciary.
I recall my last hearing with him. He instructed me to secure services for an offender. I advised him I would forward the information. He said, why can’t you do it?” I responded, “ I have to retire.” He said, “ you are not old enough to retire. He further stated the retirement policy needed changing.” He said, I would be truly missed.” Truly terms of endearment from a federal judge.
My prayers will be with his family. May God bless.

I had the privilege of trying many cases to Judge Kopf including as a young lawyer. He treated everyone equally and professionally with a sly sense of humor and was an outstanding jurist.

    My condolences to his family.

Rich is my Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity brother and was an example for all to follow. He was as I recall sort of “dumped” at Kearney State (at that time was its name) and he was quite involved in the politics of the University. He was the President of the fraternity and did an exemplary job. He will and is missed. Quite the gentleman, I absolutely do not have a negative thing one could say about him. RIP at Chapter Eternal.

I clerked for Judge Kopf from 1987-1990. During that time my husband and I adopted our two children from Korea. I will never forget his unbelievable kindness when our first adoption was delayed, when our two-year-old had major surgery, and as we became a family in the days when there was no system for adoptive parental leave. He was so understanding and flexible when family issues came up, likely in part due to his personal experience in becoming a single father with young children. He was happy the work got done and not worried when or where it was accomplished, unless a physical presence was needed. In that respect he was way before his time. Working for him professionally was a tremendous learning experience in starting my 25 years with the federal court. My deepest sympathy especially to Joan, Marne, Lisa and Keller.

Richard was a father, husband, and a judge who meant a lot to a lot of people- a reflection of a good life.
I will miss your presence and remember the times that we were together.
My thoughts and prayers go out to those who love you.
    Rest in peace.
    Bill
