James Raymond Cornell, 84, passed away on July 13, 2026. He was born on October 2, 1941, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to James H. and Frances M. (Carr) Cornell.

Jim graduated from McKeesport High School before proudly serving four years in the United States Air Force, including assignments in the Philippines and Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge in 1967. On November 25, 1967, he married the love of his life, Carol Larson.

Jim began his career as an aircraft mechanic for TWA in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1972, he and his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he worked for Goodman Tractor Parts, Shopko, Baker Hardware, and later served as manager of QP Hardware until his retirement in 2008.

Jim cherished time spent with his family. He loved hosting cookouts, playing cards and dominoes, taking fishing trips with his children and grandchildren, and enjoying family road trips. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, and the many memories he created with those he loved.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Carol; his children, Cherry Cornell (Todd Reynolds), Cathy Dickinson (Gerry), Terri Acton (Matt), Kevin Cornell (Shannon), and Matthew Cornell (Stacy); seven grandchildren; and one sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Frances M. Cornell; two brothers; and one sister.

I never had the opportunity to meet James, but I’ve the pleasure of working with his talented son, Matthew Cornell, at State Farm. It’s clear that the same strong work ethic and values Matt has inherited from his father. May James’s soul rest in peace.
