Evelyn Luella Johnson

Evelyn Luella Johnson was born on December 5, 1935 to Julius and Frieda (Geyer) Volker, the last of nine children.
She was confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church. After graduating from Humboldt High School, she attended Peru State College and Lincoln School of Commerce. Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher at a one room schoolhouse for a short time and a secretary at an insurance company.
She married Dayle Eugene Johnson on November 15, 1957 in Humboldt and moved to a farm north of Waverly. They were happily married for 63 years, had 5 children and an AFS student chosen child. As her children got older, Evelyn chose to work outside of the home as a cook at Shirley’s in Waverly, then started her own cleaning business which she operated until she retired. Evelyn was known for the thousands of cinnamon rolls and kolaches she made for countless bake sales at her children’s school clubs. Evelyn raised and sold chickens which were also used for her most often cooked meal–fried chicken. Evelyn loved to talk and would chat with strangers and friends alike everywhere she went. She also loved hosting anyone willing to come for a visit.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Linda Byorth-Detrio, College Station, TX, Bruce Johnson, Lincoln, Karen Williams (Terry), Lincoln, Brian Johnson (Shelly), Waverly, Arlan Johnson, Waverly, AFS child Kathryn (Damian) Watt, Melbourne, Australia, her grandchildren, Andrew (Jessica) Byorth, Sarah (Nick) Holton, Emily (Kris) Ricamore, Van Williams, Veranda (Ciaran) Mulligan, Bryce (Xarianna) Johnson, Cameron Johnson and Louise Watt, great-grandchildren Matthew and Hadley, Elin and Amelia, Everly and Lillian, Nathalia, Jensen and Shiloh, and special friends, Suzie Johnson and Meghan Johnson, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings and their spouses, her husband Dayle, and grandchildren Timothy Byorth, Stephanie Johnson, and Kial Johnson.
A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Bethlehem Covenant Church, 18841 N 98th St, Waverly, NE.

Evelyn and Dayle were close friends of my parents. We spent time out at the farm learning lessons. How to clean chickens and cut weeds out of beans. Although it was done reluctantly on my part, there was lots of talking and laughs. Remember her being involved with many school activities growing up. May she rest in peace.condolaces to her family. Always remember the good times.
Evelyn was always so friendly and I loved taking to her. We both had AFS students and shared experiences. We met again when we both lived at the Legacy Terrace. I know most of her children from Waverly. She was a wonderful friend.
Evelyn was a wonderful person and a great friend. She always had a kind word to say. Evelyn beamed when she talked-about her kids and grandchildren- so proud.

So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I talked to her since Christmas and we had a nice visit. I think quite often about you kids and my two, Chris and Chuck, playing together on the farm north of Waverly. Charlene and I had a wonderful lifetime relationship with your folks
I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend her services. .
I send my sympathy and prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the Johnson family. Evelyn and my mom Elaine were good friends and we all went to school with the Johnson Kids. She was such a nice lady and so friendly. Her work on her is finished and now she’s walking with Jesus and finally home with Dayle. Rest in peace Evelyn.
