Coddy Rogene Houchen

featured image

Coddy Rogene Houchen, age 88 of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023, with her sons Tommy and Terry by her side.  Coddy was born on July 19, 1935 in Humboldt, Nebraska, the daughter of Harold and Agnes (Fencil) Freeland.  Her family moved to Lincoln when she and sister Sharre were young girls.

Coddy met the love of her life, Tom, at Lincoln High school. They both graduated in 1953. And as any good Link knows, “We’re Linked for Life”. After high school she graduated from and worked at Ben Your Hairdresser.  She and Tom were married in 1955.

In the early 70’s she started a new business venture, Coddy’s Indian Jewelry, since her private collection of turquoise jewelry had become so large.  Coddy and Tom also owned and ran The Korny Korner, corn stand, at the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln, for several years.  They sold the corn stand, retired their red and white, striped overalls and started a new tradition at the fair of selling Indian Jewelry for more than 20 years. They had a gift shop at the Best Western Airport inn for 38 years.

Coddy adored her grandkids and great-grandkids immensely.  She was such a kind and generous person.  She never met a stranger.  She loved and spoiled her four-legged kids as much as the two-legged ones.  And Coddy was a fabulous cook!  She loved to feed us!  We loved our Sunday, family dinners when the kids were growing up.  Some of our best family memories.

Coddy is leaving an enormous hole in our hearts and will be greatly missed, but we are comforted, knowing that she and Tom are dancing in heaven!

Coddy is survived by her sons Tommy, Terry (Susi), grandchildren Lacey (Peter) Hudnut, Kelly (Jessica) Houchen, her four great-grandchildren Penelope and John (Jack) Hudnut, Winona and Ridley Houchen.  Niece Susan (Kevin) Patt. Many loved great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, her parents, sister Sharre Plautz, nephew Dan Plautz, and son Todd Michael.

Celebration of Life to be held September 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church; 8550 Pioneers Blvd. Lincoln, Nebraska.
