Jon F. Heumphreus

featured image

Jon Frederick Heumphreus passed peacefully on December 15th, 2022, at the age of 80. He was born March 12th, 1942, to Kermit B and Fredella E (Radford) Heumphreus and spent his childhood in Lincoln, NE, and Cambridge, NE. After attending three years at Lincoln High School and graduating from Cambridge High School, Jon attended the University of Kearney to study construction engineering. He spent over 40 years as a superintendent in the grain elevator industry, retiring in 2012. For most of his life, Jon was a resident and landlord in the Clinton neighborhood owning several properties, three of which he built himself. He was also an influential member of the Clinton Neighborhood Organization. Jon’s passion for construction led him and his brother-in-law, Gene (Woody) Woodhead, to build a lake house on Lake McConaughy for family and friends to enjoy.

Jon had an unrivaled passion for life; his quick wit, orneriness, and genuine care for people led to a life full of love, friendships, and family.

Jon is survived by his significant other, Dixie Rehm; daughter Kelli Elwell & Joel (Son in law), granddaughters Holli & Emily Zimmerman; daughter Jodi Sand & John (son-in-law); granddaughters Tanner Ogden, Kyra Ambs, Leyna, & Nahla Sand; grandsons Coen & Nolan Sand, and his beloved dog, Missie and feisty cat, Thaio.

“In the end, it is not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years.”

A casual Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday December 21, 2022 at Havelock Social Hall 4538 N 62nd Street in Lincoln from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm.

Got to know Jon when my brother joined his family through marriage, Jon was truly one of the most giving and generous men I have ever met. He was always quick to help out in any situation where he would give you the shirt of his back if you needed it and would ask for nothing in return. Rest in peace Jon, you are one guy who truly deserves to walk with God after how you did things on earth.

We will miss Jon at the LHS Lunch bunch gatherings. Jon was fun and I enjoyed visiting with him during our lunch bunch. I lived and taught music at Arthur, NE and also worked and helped build a cabin during one summer for an area rancher while working for a builder in Arthur.

Jodi and other members of the Heumphreus Extended Family, please know that all of you and your father/grandfather are in my thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately, I will be out of Lincoln at the time of Wednesday’s Celebration of Life so I will be unable to present my condolences in person. May God bless. Tom Ryan

I have so many wonderful memories of Uncle Jon and all the Heumphreus and Woodhead cousins. It was so much fun to ride in the red Baracuda. Love you Uncle Jon!

As an adult, I seldom got back to Lincoln, but my best times were spent visiting Jon. I lived next door to Jon from the age of three until I joined the navy at age seventeen. I could write a great “American life” novel about us growing up together.
It wasn’t just a friendly relationship for Jon was like my big brother (7 months) and his mom was like a second mother. Together, they greatly impacted my formative years. Jon set the example and I in turn always wanted and tried to be like him.
I’m sure that anyone who ever met Jon, will miss him.
On his next journey I also will miss him and wish Jon “Fair Winds and Following Seas”

Thoughts and Prayers for the Heumphreus family. I remember when Jon joined our class in Cambridge. He was a asset to the class and the CHS sports program.
    RIP Jon! 🙏🙏

What can you say to someone who has always been one of the most essential parts of your world, someone who was always there to help? Someone who helped you grow, providing love, strength and support, helping you become the person you are today? What can you say to let him know that he’s the best, and that you can only hope you’ve inherited some of his strength? What words would you say if you got the chance? Maybe you just say “I Love You, Dad,” and hope he understands.

Jon was my ‘landlord’ for a couple of years in the early 2000s. I have to say he was the most friendly, genuine person from the time I met him. Even years after we moved out of his “duplex,” we would run into him around town and he always remembered us and would stop to chat. Jon was a genuinely kind person, and I was really sad to hear of his passing. We drove by “our” old duplex today and as we drove past Jon’s home, we realized that it was under new ownership, and found out that Jon had passed away. I wanted to leave my condolences for Jon, to pay my respects–but also to let the family know just how many lives Jon touched (in a positive way) over his life. I’m sure there are countless others just like me who remember him just as well. 🙂 A life well-lived!
