Carol Loy Surber

featured image

On October 19 1937, Carol Loy Schriver was born in a farmhouse outside of Gothenburg, NE to Kenneth and Betty Schriver. She was the fifth child in a family of seven children. On December 4th 2022, she slipped away peacefully, surrounded by love, to join her loved ones in Heaven.

Carol had a very happy childhood and by age 7, she was helping with the family milk business. She started out washing milk bottles and capping them once filled. By age 12, if she wasn’t driving the milk truck, she was running the bottles to the door and collecting the empty ones. That dairy business grew into a small grocery store that continued to operate until 1996. Something else special happened when Carol was 12. She accepted Jesus into her heart and found a forever friend. This was the moment that changed everything. She found a light that would guide her for the rest of her life.

In her senior year of high school, Carol became engaged to Fred and began planning her wedding. But, the boy that dunked her in the pool in grade school and walked her home a couple of times in Junior High, was back in town. After 4 nights of walking, talking and falling in love, Carol had to write a “Dear John” letter to Fred. She continued planning her wedding, she simply changed the groom! After 10 years of marriage, living in 4 states and having 4 children, Larry and Carol Surber settled in Lincoln, NE.

Carol was the epitome of a homemaker. Never without makeup and lipstick, dinner on the table at 5:30, pancakes on Saturday morning, roast and potatoes after church on Sunday. Along with running the home, she had several side gigs. Amway, Color Consultant, American Baptist Women, Christian Education Board, Christian Women’s Club executive board and gourmet cook. She was a circuit speaker for Stonecroft Ministries where she spoke at over 100 venues throughout the years, teaching about forgiveness. The teaching of forgiveness was her life’s calling after the passing of her son Jake. Because of what she experienced, she was able to lead hundreds of lost and broken people to Christ. This was her silver lining. Just recently, she went back through the thank you letters that she received over the years. This brought her a sense of purpose and immense joy.

Carol is survived by daughter Kelly (Don Gray), son David (Lauren Adrover-Surber) and daughter Jennifer (Jason Adkisson); sisters Arita Wilson and Vicki (Larry Kinnan). Grandchildren Jessica, Leanne, Rebekah, Jake, Joey, Jude and Luke. 5 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.

She is preceded in death by husband Larry, son Jake, son-in-law Dave, sisters Betty Ann and Janet and brothers Kay and Gene.

The family has entrusted Aspen Cremation and Burial Services with the arrangements. A Praise Service is scheduled for 1:30pm Saturday January 14, 2022 at First Baptist Church 14th and K Lincoln, NE. Reception to follow. As a memorial to Carol, please look inside your heart and forgive whatever or whoever has a hold over you. Through God, you have grace. Grace is the act of forgiving. Open your heart to love and acceptance, let it go and move on.
