Scott Dean Slack

featured image

Scott Dean Slack was born to Pamela Kay Slack (Stone) and Gerald Dean Slack in Cozad, NE on December 5th, 1964. He was the oldest of four siblings, and the family lived in Cozad and Lamar, before eventually settling in Lexington. As a child, Scott was inquisitive and had the unique ability to talk both your ears off, regardless of how well he did or didn’t know you. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1984 and spent most of the next twenty five years in the same town. His sociable personality led him to work at Kwikstop and Mac’s Short stop, as well as helping with maintenance around the Eagle Run Apartments. Scott’s first and only child, Destiny, was born in August of 2002. After her birth and some medical issues, they both moved to Kearney to be closer to family.

In Kearney, Scott enjoyed raising his daughter, being healthy and active, and constantly meeting new people. He worked at Morris Press seasonally for many years and was also employed with Walmart for some time. Scott found many flexible, short-term jobs through Associated Staffing, as well, and did some part-time work for the Village Cleaners Laundromat over several years. Scott married Rebecca Slack (Wagner) in fall of 2010 before he was unexpectedly widowed in 2011. When he wasn’t working, Scott spent most of his time with his daughter riding bikes, playing tennis, and rough housing to the extreme. He also enjoyed being an uncle, taking his nieces and nephews to feed ducks or play any game or sport outside. Scott was also known for his famous egg sandwiches, if you were ever lucky enough to have one. He enjoyed his family and rarely missed the big holidays and bbqs. Although most of his adult life was in Kearney, Scott lived his final days in Lincoln where he worked at Green Quest Recycling. Since He had a lifelong passion for recycling, his final job was by far his favorite.  While doing what he loved, he fostered many friendships and became a valued asset to the business. He will be missed by many.

Scott is survived by his daughter Destiny Damme, siblings Shannon Lippitt (Slack) and Shane Slack, Uncle Allen (Noriko) Stone, Aunts Carol (Raymond) Jacob, Connie Armstead, Donna Hazen, family friends Carey (Garrett) Becker and Megan (Jeff) Koch, nieces and Nephews Jennifer Kissee (Lippitt), Alex Slocumb (Sanders), James Sanders, Ricky Stotts, Jesse Johnston, Robert Lippitt, Damon Sanders, Christine (Cody) Renken (Rucilez), Dominique Vasquez (Slack), and Prudence McClain-Jones (Johnston), numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as several cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother Pamela Slack (Stone), maternal and paternal grandparents, his uncles Scott Stone and Gary Slack, aunt Carma Barnes (Stone), sister Stacy Rucilez (Slack), Uncle Ron and Uncle Gene, nephew Nathaniel Stotts, and wife Rebecca Slack (Wagner).

Matthew Owen Soldatke, 13, passed away on August 17, 2021 surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 20th 2008, to Steve and Jill Soldatke of Lincoln, NE.  Matthew had a gift to teach lessons without ever being able to speak a word. His smile lit up a room.  He absolutely had the most gorgeous curly soft hair that was meant for running your fingers through. He endured so much, fought hard and battled for every day on this earth.  He taught his parents to trust God, dig deep, love hard, persevere, fight for the important things and forget the small stuff.

Grateful to have shared in his life his parents, his siblings Micah, Megan, Mason and Max Soldatke; his grandparents Bob and Sue Shumaker (Parker, SD) Cheryl Johnson (Sioux Falls, SD), Larry Soldatke (Sioux Falls, SD); Aunts and Uncles James and Kim Shumaker (Greenville TN) Curt and Elisa Shumaker (Sioux Falls SD) and Ryan Soldatke (Sioux Falls SD) cousins Oliver and Amelia Shumaker, Parker Shumaker and Lisa Soldatke and a host of extended family and friends. Matthew was blessed to be loved by many.

A special thank- you his current private duty nurses: Rosa, Laura, Trevor, Tina, Tim, Susan and Annalisa who loved and cared for him, his Horisun hospice nurse Shannon who helped Matthew’s family navigate end-of-life care and also to his numerous doctors, therapists, educators and past care givers; including his 1st two special nurses- Jane and Serena. Every person that partook in Matthew’s care contributed to him being able to live his best life at home surrounded by his family.

A celebration of life has been scheduled for September 12, 2021 at 1:00pm at Piedmont Park Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4801 A Street.
