Anita Hohmann
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and friend to many, Anita “Granny” Hohmann Newton passed away on October 3rd, 2023. She was born on June 6th, 1958 in a small town in Germany. At the time of her death, she was living in Lincoln, Nebraska. Anita is survived by her three daughters, her fifteen grandchildren, and her seven great-grandchildren. She also “adopted” about a dozen other grandchildren throughout the years. She loved to spend time listening to music, talking on the phone, and being with her many family members. She also loved to talk about her spirituality, her love of Jesus Christ, and her final resting place in heaven. The family will be holding a private Celebration of Life, but is welcoming cards or kind letters, addressed to the Hohmann Family, 4822 Cleveland Avenue, Lincoln NE 68504. Joyce Page
Joyce Ripper Page was the 4th of 5 children born to Rev. Dr. C Harold & Opal (Wheeler) Ripper in 1936. She grew up and graduated from college in Bethany, Oklahoma where she met and married Monte M. Page in 1957. After college graduation she taught elementary school in Kansas and Oklahoma for 9 years before moving to Lincoln for her husband to teach at the University of Nebraska. She realized her calling was really Social Work so earned a Master’s of Social Work at UNL graduating in 1974. She was Supervisor of Group Homes for Girls at Nebraska Center for Children & Youth (1974-1976), Social Worker and Supervisor of Social Services for LRC Security Service (1976-1979) where she established and facilitated Support Groups for Parents of the Chronically III Adult Males and Parents of Sex Offenders. Along with the psychologist, they began a treatment group for sex offenders. In 1979 she began work at CMHCLC in the Chronically Mentally III Program and supervised that program until her retirement in 1996. While there, she established and facilitated a Parent Support Group for parents of the clients plus started a library of books on mental health for parents as well as providing supervision of staff, case management and psychotherapy. Following her retirement she was a volunteer for Tabitha Hospice for 5 years plus increasing her sewing skills and other creative activities. She was active at 1st United Methodist Church, Lincoln Quilters Guild and various other groups in the Lincoln community. In the 1980’s Joyce & her family moved to an acreage south of Lincoln where they spent 30+ years. In 2012 they moved to Dearborn Heights, MI to be near their daughter so she could help as her husband’s Parkinson’s Disease worsened. After his death in 2015, she became active in Dearborn 1st United Methodist Church where she made many new friends and participated in several groups, sang in the choir and served on several committees. She returned to Lincoln in 2019. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, her husband of almost 58 years and her siblings and spouses: LeRoy (Margaret) Ripper, Nadene (Ramon)Richards, Darlene Ripper Graves and Marloe (Dolores) Ripper She is survived by her children: Kevin (Ken) (Linda) of Dallas, Michael (Susan Steider) of Lincoln and Janet Page Safawi of Lincoln, her grandchildren: Ali, Serena and Mohamed Safawi and Isabella Page. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law and spouses: Marilyn (Charles) Moreland and Gloria (Garry) Wright and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, and cousins and many friends in both Lincoln and Dearborn, MI. At Joyce’s request, she will be cremated and there will be no services. Norman “Norm” G. Slama
Norman Gene Slama, a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, and formerly Wilber, Nebraska, passed away on September 26, 2023, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital at the age of 71. A Christmas baby, Norm was born at the Beatrice Community Hospital on December 25, 1951, to Rudolph Slama and Engeline (Langhorst) Slama, the youngest of six children. As a boy, Norm lived with his family in rural Friend, Nebraska, and attended country school in District 52 through the seventh grade. In November 1965, his family moved to Wilber, where Norm completed his eighth-grade school year and went on to graduate from Wilber High School in 1970, playing tackle for the Wolverines, lettering in both his junior and senior years, and making honorable mention, Southern Nebraska Conference. He continued to live on the same street in Wilber for 38 years. Norm enjoyed farm life immensely. He did chores every day, without exception, and he loved working with the livestock and helping his father in the fields, learning to drive a tractor at a young age. He spent many happy days romping with his siblings, friends, and beloved dog Blackie, as he learned to fish and hunt, shoot with a bow and arrow and, later, his first rifle. Norm was a hard worker. While in school, Norm worked at the Wilber Bakery and the bowling alley, cleaning bowling pins. He hauled bales for local farming families at harvest, and worked for a smithy in the local blacksmith shop for two summers, under the tutelage of Ervin Brauff. His vocational life involved 34 years of service to ALPO – the Crete plant of Allen Products based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, now known as Nestlé-Purina Pet Foods – from 1970 until 2004. He tendered another six years of service to Duncan Aviation, from 2004 until 2010, and thereafter five more years to Leach Camper Sales before retiring in 2021. His interests were varied, and included his love for classic cars and the beautiful Barn Art he created and gifted to many. He had a huge heart and if it was within his power to do it, he loved serving and helping his neighbors, family, and friends. Norm served as a City Councilman in Wilber from 1980 to 1984, and was a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad worker for 29 years, from 1974 until 2003. Most recently, Norm served on the Autumn Wood HOA Board of Directors where he lived. Norm gave up his life-long bachelor status when he married Mona Lee Huddleston on February 18, 2003. They were at home in Seward briefly, thereafter moving to Lincoln in 2004, where they remained for the balance of their twenty-year marriage. They attended Heritage Bible Church in Havelock. Norm is survived by his wife, Mona; sister-in-law Terry Slama (Beaver City); sister Janice (Jerry) Heyen (Yakima, WA); sister Karen Clem (Bellingham, WA); many beloved nieces and nephews, including Raschelle (JB) Ross (Broken Bow), Jody (Randy) VanLaningham (Hildreth), Jaylene (Chuck) Lambert (Rose Hill, KS), Kimberly Rogers (Nathan Christensen) (Orleans); Kim (Mark) Turnquist (Yakima, WA); Bill (Tammy) Sladek (Cordova), Peggy (Billy) Baugh (Friend), Christy (Jeremy) Wagner (Denver, IA), and David (Vanessa) Sladek (Friend); Julie Clem (Spokane, WA) and Lynnette (Sean) Berry (Bellingham, WA); stepson Jerod Triolo (Arvada, CO) and daughter, Ruby (Seneca, SC); and stepdaughter Natalie (Nick) Hershberger (Lincoln) and children, Lauren, Ben, Wil, Max, Ellie, and Greyson. Norm was preceded in death by his loving parents, Rudolph (Rudy) and Engeline (Angie) Slama; infant brother, Ronald Dale Slama; brother Milton Slama and nephew Roland Slama; sister Shirley Sladek, brother-in-law William Sladek, Jr., niece Kathy Sladek, and nephew Rex Sladek; and brother-in-law Norman Clem. A Celebration of Life will be held in Lincoln at Heritage Bible Church, 6400 Cornhusker Highway, on Saturday, October 14, at 11:00 o’clock, with a luncheon to follow. Mary Lou Walter
Mary Lou Walter was born on November 11th, 1927, in the home of her parents Joseph Chester (Chet) Reason and Maude Mae Reason in Hastings, Nebraska. Along with her sister Nathalie, the family moved to Lincoln when Mary Lou was ten months old. She attended Clinton Grade School, Whittier Junior High, and Lincoln High School graduating in 1945. At Lincoln High, she met LeRoy Walter, and they were married on May 16th, 1948. LeRoy passed away September 18th, 2010. They were married for 62 years. While attending Lincoln High, Mary Lou worked over the lunch hour as a cashier in the cafeteria. During that time, she also worked as a cashier at Walgreens on 13th and O Streets. After graduating, she worked as a cashier at Hardy Furniture for four years. Mary Lou did bookkeeping and various other jobs to assist LeRoy at his company Lee Walter Plastic-Graphics for most of her adult life. Her interests included gardening, sewing, bowling, roller skating, and music. She and LeRoy sang in the church choir at Ebenezer United Church of Christ for forty-five years. She also sang with the Melodoes and Sweet Adelines. Mary Lou and LeRoy had three children, Patricia Lee born May 8th, 1949-died October 3rd , 2015, Janet Kay born October 3rd, 1950, and Richard LeRoy born December 5th, 1953 (on LeRoy’s 26th birthday). Grandchildren were born to Janet and her husband Larry Johnson starting with Jared, followed by Darren, and Andrew, Jared and his wife Heather provided Mary Lou and LeRoy with two great grandchildren, Lucas and Derek. Mary Lou was a very loving wife, mother, and friend. She always held a deep love for animals, and the Walter family always had a dog or two; Prince, Tweedy and Simon (registered toy poodles) and finally Sadie. Mary Lou loved visits from the furry babies of her family! Mary Lou will be deeply missed by her family and friends! Cremation. No visitation. No service. Jimmy L. Halte
Jimmy L Halte, age 40, passed peacefully on Wednesday evening, September 6th, 2023 surrounded by many who loved him. Jimmy was born on August 22, 1983 in Nebraska. He was a long time resident of Lincoln, Nebraska. Survived by his mother Diane Keller and stepfather Keven Smisek of Lincoln; sister Candy Klinker and husband Steve, sister Melissa Halte, both of Lincoln and brother Christopher Thomas of Lincoln; nieces Kayla (Shawn) and Kira; nephew Caleb; great niece Evelyn and by many other family and friends. Jimmy was dearly loved by many. Jimmy lived life to the fullest. Jimmy had many hobbies that included fishing, camping, racing, video games and listening to Garth Brooks but to know Jimmy was to know he was no stranger to anyone. Jimmy loved to just sit and chat with most anyone for hours. Jimmy wasn’t afraid to learn new things either. If you were fixing something whether that be drywall, plumbing or a vehicle Jimmy was right there with you giving you his opinion or idea. If you weren’t sure of how to go about fixing it then Jimmy was right there to teach you. Jimmy loved many things but one thing Jimmy didn’t do was rush through life. Jimmy ran at his own pace and on his own time, taking in what life had to offer and enjoying his hobbies. Jimmy really did live his life to the fullest. Jimmy had a kind heart and a laugh that would just make you smile. Jimmy will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. May he be at Peace at the rivers of Heaven.
