Craig Allen Burklund
Craig Allen Burklund, 49, of Osceola passed away on November 13, 2018. Graduate of Geneva High School in 1987. Preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Survived by his best friend, his dog Buddy of 16 years, loving brothers and sisters, brother-in-law, niece, and many friends. The family would like to thank everyone who made Craig’s life fulfilling. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

James Allen Williams, Jr.
| James “Al” Allen Williams, Jr., of rural Bennet, NE was born March 7, 1936 in Durham, N.C. to James A. and Martha G. Williams. He grew up in Chapel Hill where, as a child, he fell in love with nature as he roamed the native forests near Morgan Creek with his dogs. His interest in nature was encouraged by his naturalist grandfather who also taught him to question various beliefs and to examine those beliefs for evidence to support them. One of the things he questioned was the belief in the racial inequality he saw around him. Those two passions (the natural world and racial inequality), along with a love of family, set the trajectory of his life.
He earned a BA degree (1958) from University of North Carolina where he was Phi Beta Kappa, an MA (Cornell), where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and a PhD (University of North Carolina) in the Sociology of Race and Ethnic Relations. While at UNC in 1960, the Greensboro sit ins began, and Al met nightly with the protesters as their numbers swelled. They were the subject of the first of his 41 published papers. As the protests spread throughout the south, he also attended meetings with leaders of the major civil rights organizations, including Dr. Martin Luther King. In his final year at UNC he was named “Outstanding Graduate Student”. He joined the faculty at the University of Washington at Seattle and then the University of Texas at Austin. There he continued his civil rights work by stopping an Urban Renewal project that would have destroyed an African American community. In 1970, Al started his 40 years in the Sociology Dept at UNL where he continued to publish and teach. He was a member of Centennial College, a Fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies, an Advisory Editor for Great Plains Research, and a member of the Faculty Senate. He also coauthored a book, Tolerance for Noncomformity. In 1979, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. As he became increasingly concerned about the environment, Al started teaching Environmental Sociology and became Director of Environmental Studies. He then served as Chair of the Sociology Department for eight years. His last paper showed the downturn of depictions of nature in award winning children’s books. This paper received worldwide interest. He was a past member of the Lincoln Environmental Advisory Commitee and a recent member of Bennet Planning Commission. Al was a quiet man with a big heart, a scholar’s mind, and a gift for teaching. Besides his family and students, he loved dogs, birdwatching, reading science fiction, Nebraska volleyball, and chardonnay wine as well as the Insight book club, his writers’ group, and folk music. Al’s last years were spent much like his early ones, walking in his native forest with his beloved dogs. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Rebecca Haas Williams, and four children: Martha W. Deane (Albany, NY), James A. Williams, III (Venice Beach, CA), John Williams (Kristine) (Basal, Switzerland), and David Williams (Lincoln), five grandchildren: Zachary and William Deane; Addison and Luke Williams; and Benjamin Williams, his sister, Baird Garrabrant (Van Noah) (Raleigh, NC), his beloved dog, Parker, and Blackjack the cat. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles G. Williams. A celebration of life is pending. Kathie A. Pape
Kathie A. Pape, 70, of Lincoln, passed away November 23, 2018. She was born September 22, 1948 to Billy and Donna Kehlbeck. Kathie graduated from Syracuse High School in 1966 and from UNL in 1970 with a B.S. in English. She taught 34 years for Lincoln Public Schools as an English teacher at Irving Middle School and Bryan Learning Center until retiring in 2005. Kathie enjoyed reading, playing cards, and serving others. She was a member of Southwood Lutheran Church, a member of P.E.O., a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and a teacher for Sunday and Vacation Bible School. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Kathie is survived by sons Brian (Lindsay) and Darin (Ashley); grandchildren Jordan, Natalie, and Cameron; brother Dalton (Jan) Kehlbeck; sister Janet (Tom) Chaussee; brother-in-laws Cliff (Charlotte) Pape and Marvin (Loretta) Pape; sister-in-law Myra Hale; and nieces, nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by husband Wayne; and parents Billy and Donna Kehlbeck. Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, at Southwood Lutheran Church, 4301 Wilderness Hills Blvd., Lincoln, NE. Luncheon following service. No visitation. Private family inurnment. LaVerne J. Bish (Turner)
LaVerne J. Bish (Turner) , 96 , died peacefully November 22, 2018 following a short illness. LaVerne was born March 3, 1922, the youngest of eleven children of Charles and Anna Turner in Trumbull, NE. After graduating from Trumbull High School, she trained at Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, NE. In 1944 she married Cyril Bish of Giltner, NE, her husband of 62 years. She also entered the Nurse Corp of the U.S. Army in 1944 and served until 1945. The family moved to Lincoln in 1954 where they raised two daughters. From 1965 to 1987, she was the Director of Nursing at Milder Manor Nursing Home. LaVerne was passionate about service to others, and she touched many people’s lives. She volunteered at the Lied Center and Bryan Health Medical Center. She was also active in the Presbyterian church, PEO, UNL Faculty Women’s Group and the Fifty-Fifty Bridge Club, and served on committees at the Grand Lodge at the Preserve, where she resided until her death. She is preceded in death by her husband, Cyril, her parents and all of her ten siblings. She is survived by her daughters Musa Campbell of Cincinnati, Sara Evenson of Lincoln and granddaughter Madelynne Campbell of Cincinnati. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, November 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln. Pamela (Pam) Renae Kuebler Gardner
September 3, 1951 – November, 19, 2018 Pamela (Pam) Renae Kuebler Gardner passed away in her home November 19, 2018. Born September 3, 1951, in Lincoln to Lois (Maupin) Kuebler Valencia and Albert Kuebler. Her husband, Kenny Gardner, preceded her in death. Graduate of Lincoln High School. A retired hairdresser with Fernando’s Salon and Partner’s in Hair for over 30 years. An avid golfer, traveler, and Huskers fan, she made many cherished memories with family and friends. Pam will be remembered by friends and family for her contagious love of life and faithfulness to God. In Pam’s eyes everyone was family and everyone was deeply loved and welcomed with open arms. She was survived by her daughter Lisa (Gardner), son Aaron Gardner, DeBrie, son-in-law Scott DeBrie, brother, Sam Valencia, sister-in-law Sharon Valencia, brother, Gary Kuebler, sister-in-law Mimi Kuebler, cousin Patricia Cleveland, and grandchildren, Austin, Lexi, Andrea, Jessica, and Ryland Gardner. A special thank you to the Tabitha Hospice Team, and Becky and Hillary Whitney with, “Service with a Caring Heart” for helping care for Pam in her final days on earth.
