Janey Bonita Peterson
Janey Bonita Peterson, 86, went to be with her Lord on May 1, 2019 at Homestead Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Janey Bonita Carlson Peterson was born March 20, 1933 to Lloyd LeRoy Carlson and Minnie Lavina Bressler Carlson on the family farm near Gibbon, NE. The family moved to a farm near Cozad/Gothenburg area. The first half of her high school years were at Cozad High School. She finished high school at Gothenburg, graduating in 1950. Her senior year she won a superior for her singing of Ava Maria at the state contest. Janey was not able to attend her Commencement service because of a serve case of mumps. She attended Kearney College for two summers and taught two years at District 83. She married Gene Peterson on March 30, 1952 at the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg. To this union was born four children, Cindy, Linda, Greg and Tim. The couple were charter members of the New Hope Church in Custer County. Later they became part of the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg. She worked as a nurse aide, and bookkeeper after her children were in school. Her final working years were at the Gothenburg Times weekly newspaper, retiring after 37 years of service. Singing was a joyful part of her life. Church choir was a favorite, especially special cantatas given for the congregation. She also sang and served in the Gothenburg Community Choir. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Christmas program director, and in many other church ministries. Janey loved decorating her home and making it a welcoming place for all to come. Hospitality was her and her husband’s gift. If anyone needed a meal or a place to stay she offered her home. She really loved holidays especially Christmas. It was the most wonderful time of year for her and her family. Janey’s primary gift was visiting with friends and strangers alike. She always took the opportunity to give a greeting and show she cared. Her greatest thrill was introducing people to her best friend, Jesus Christ. Even during the last couple weeks of her life, she shared her faith with everyone she came in contact with. Above all else, she loved her kids and grandkids. She followed all of them in their endeavors such as singing in choir at school, playing in the band and going to many, many sporting events. She gave them her unconditional love. Survivors are her two daughters and two sons: Cindy Peterson and Linda (Doug) Sittler, all of Lincoln; Greg Peterson, Sterling, NE; Tim (Lynn) Peterson, Gothenburg. Six grandchildren: Kelsey (Bret) Marschman, Kiley Peterson, Kaitlyn (Drake) Beranek, Kira Peterson, Cryssa (Evan) Bartels, and Dani Sittler. Five great grandchildren: McKenna Peterson, Myka Peterson, Kinley Beranek, Cohen Bartels, and Kayda Beranek. Two sister-in-laws: Ruth Carlson of Gothenburg, Margilu Peterson of Cozad, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joann and Boyd Phillippi, of Cozad, Numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, her parents Minnie and Lloyd Carlson, a brother, Lloyd George, a sister and brother-in-law, Claribel and James Crews, her brother, Wallace Carlson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duane and Lavonne Peterson, brother-in-law, Don Peterson, niece and nephew, Mary and Clay Crews and niece, Brenda Peterson Gilg. Celebration of Life service will be May 13, 2019 at the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg at 1:30 pm. Memorials to family for later designation.

Keith R. Scheer
Keith was born in Winner, SD on January 13, 1942 and God took him home April 23, 2019. Keith’s family moved to Lincoln, NE and he attended school here. The family moved to Ashland for 3 years before coming to Lincoln. He received his GED while in the Navy. After returning to Lincoln, Keith acquired his CDL and became a local dump truck driver and this was his profession for 50 years. Keith was awarded several awards for his safe driving ability while working with General Excavating for over 19 years and Constructors for almost 10 yrs. After having a small stroke in 2015, Keith retired. He belonged TO Alcoholics Anonymous and received his 18 year medallion in February this year. Keith enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening and canning (making his own salsa) among other things. He and Marla would go around the countryside picking plums, chokecherries, elderberry and whatever they could find to make jams and jellies. He was a great cook and loved handing out his soups and other dishes he would make. Survivors include his wife Marla (Elmshauser), sisters Peggy Scheer (Hoffman) of Lincoln, NE and Marilyn Olson of Winner, SD. Nephews and nieces in South Dakota and Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Zola Scheer and brother Roger Scheer Saturday, May 4, 2019 will be Keith’s Celebration of Life at The Meeting Place, 2748 S St, Lincoln, NE. Memorials to Marla in care of Aspen Cremation Service, 4822 Cleveland Avenue, Lincoln, NE 68504. His family will take Keith on his final trip to Ogallala, NE on May 11, 2019. Margaret W. Angelos
Margaret Westergren Angelos, the younger daughter of Alma Neilson & Arthur Cornelius Westergren, grew up in Cadillac, MI, attended Central Michigan College & received her RN degree from Edward W Sparrow Hospital in 1953 & Enterostomal Therapy Certification later on in life. She married Theodore Art Angelos,MD. They lived in Canton, SD for many years, raised children Brad (Evelyn) Angelos, Melanie Angelos, Melissa (Jay) Sveen and Brock (Amy) Angelos before moving to Lincoln, NE, when they both retired to be closer to family. They enjoyed being grandparents of Allyson & Adrienne Angelos, Jared (Leah) Sveen, Stephanie (Will) Hansen, Dan (Stacy) Sveen & Nicholas Angelos. Margaret was an avid vegetable & flower gardener, baker, oil painter, seamstress, & camping enthusiast. She was a loving great grandmother to Braxton & Beckham Sveen, Emery & Leighton Sveen and Gavin & Camryn Hansen. She passed away on April 29, 2019 and will be greatly missed. Her memorial service will be held at Canton Lutheran Church on May 26th at 2:00 pm in Canton,SD, with the internment to be a private ceremony of the immediate family.

Richard Dale Monroe
Richard Monroe, 87, resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on April 25th, 2019. Richard was preceded by his wife, Marlene (McCoy) Monroe. Richard is survived by his daughters, Maureen Beltran, Jill Crane, Angela DiBella; sons: Rick & Kim Monroe, Mark & Kim Monroe. Richard had 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Richard enjoyed playing bridge, reading western novels and watching old western movies and shows. Richard was in the U.S. Army. Richard was the 13th man to walk on the Moon. After Army life, Richard was a butcher in Crete, Nebraska for a few years. Then Richard and Marlene moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he worked for Abel’s Construction Company, until he retired. Richard was born in Fairfax, South Dakota, son of Sherman & Frances (Burnett) Monroe. Richard had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Richard was lovingly known to his sibling as “Saint Richard”. He will be missed.

Mildred Ann Owens
Mildred A. (Phifer) Owens 3.30.32-4.23.19 Mildred, the daughter of Josephine Clarabelle Ramsey and Earl Victor Phifer, began her earthly journey in Gothenburg, NE, on March 30, 1932. Surrounded by her loving family, she peacefully went to her heavenly home on April 23, 2019. At the time of her birth, her parents were living and ranching new the water tower near Arnold, NE. Mildred was an infant when the family left Nebraska and moved to her father’s homestead in Cow Creek by Lance Creek, WY. At the age of 5 Mildred started school because she raised heck when siblings Beverly and Leslie left for school each day. Her teacher, Mrs. Teeze, allowed her into school as long as she could keep up and behave. When Mildred was in second grade, the family moved back to Arnold to take care of her Grandma Phifer’s place. In 1940 the family was living in the Sand Hills, Logan County, south of Dunning. The family moved to Hot Springs, SD when she was fourteen. She attended Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs, SD. In 1947, she married LaVerne Busskohl, that union bore two children, Jo Anne L. Owens-Nauslar and Dick E. Owens. Later she married John D. Owens, and a daughter, Milinda K. Wineteer was born. Mildred was a member of Newcastle, WY and surrounding area communities for 65 years. Before moving to the Painted Hills area in Newcastle, the family lived on Wood Street, The Baldwin Place, and The Roby Place near the WY/SD state line. Her diverse working life included 20 years as ticket taker at the Mountain Inn. Mildred was later employed by the late Vern Prell at the Dogie Theatre in Newcastle. Always teaching her children the benefits of hard physical labor, Mildred also worked in the logging/timber industry with her husband John. The Owens’ also ran fall hunting camps and provided guide services in the Big Horn Mountains and the surrounding WY and SD areas. After receiving her GED in 1989 and pursuing her Certified Sterilization Tech (CST) from Purdue University Extension, Mildred used her skill set at the Weston County Health Services for 20 years. She was one of the first internationally certified CSTechs in Wyoming. In 2005 she retired and began her worldwide travels. Her volunteerism and commitment to the local health screening/fair continued 10 years after her retirement. Mildred and John Owens’ love for horses and critters launched them into the Quarter Horse Racing world with John/Glenda Fordyce, Jim Clyde and the Kline Boys. She also enjoyed walking, hunting, fishing, agriculture, animals and travel. Her family was her life. She was blessed to enjoy the recent birth of her latest great granddaughter and the college graduation of a great grandson. Mildred’s life with her children on the Little Britches Rodeo Circuit provided additional travel and an appreciation for the rural and western lifestyle. Her move in 2016 from her beloved Newcastle to Lincoln, NE, for medical reasons was an eye opener. She saw more cars and people in one day than were in all of Newcastle. While living in Lincoln, Mildred attended Trinity Chapel Church on Rokeby Road. During her 25 years of travel with Jo Anne, she went to Hawaii 11 times, Alaska twice, two Kentucky Derbies, Ireland twice, as well as Germany, France, Spain. Additionally they traveled to 44 states during Jo’s National Health/Physical Education Presidency years. Mildred was a member of the Old Country Church, Four Corners, WY and the Newcastle VFW Auxiliary 2516. Survivors include her three children JoAnne Owens-Nauslar, Lincoln, NE; Dick E. Owens (Kristy) Edgemont, SD and Milinda Wineteer (Cliff) Chadron, NE; six grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; 27 nieces and nephews and a long list of great nieces and nephews. Life long friends, Dolly Phillips, Shirley Redding, Dr. Dee Curtis, Karen Ruff, her aloha and Lincoln families and Jim/Tammy Clyde. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Earl V. and Josephine (Ramsey) Phifer, husband John D. Owens, brothers Leslie Phifer and Earl Phifer, Jr., sister Beverly Phifer, son-in law, Red Nauslar, niece Terry Lee Pierce, and nephew Matthew Phifer. Celebrations of the life and journeys of Mildred Ann (Phifer) Owens are planned as follows: Friday, May 16 from 5:30-7:00 pm, PlaMor Ballroom, 6600 West O Street, Lincoln, NE, 68528 will be a celebration of Mildred’s Nebraska roots. Friday, May 17, her family will take Mildred on her final road trip through her beloved Sand Hills to her home in Newcastle for her Going Home Celebrations. Saturday, May 18, will be Mildred’s Wyoming Celebrations of Life at The Old Country Church, Four Corners, WY 82715 at 10:30 am followed by a community send off at the Newcastle Senior Center, 627 Pine Street @ 2:30 pm. The family requests memorials to the Newcastle Senior Center (627 Pine Street, Newcastle, WY 82701), The Old Country Church (c/o Pastor Bill Haley, 5101 Highway 16, Newcastle, WY 82701), or the Charity of Your Choice.
