Rebecca A. Gerschefske
Rebecca was a remarkable woman, full of love, kindness, and wisdom. She had a unique ability to make everyone she met feel special and valued. Her laughter was infectious, and she invested in you immediately, genuinely wanting to get to know you and taking pride in becoming part of your story. She loved to socialize and felt there was no better way to spend your time than laughing and being surrounded by friends and family. Whether that was a late-night phone call to catch up, a quick stop at the house to love on the grand babies or a fancy dinner party. She found her calling when she became a mom and she genuinely wanted nothing more than to be the best mama in the world. It came through in every choice she made, every interaction she had. She was her family’s biggest cheerleader and would do anything to ensure a safe and loving life for the ones she loved. For anyone that spoke with her you know that raising her girls and standing by her husband Chuck, was her favorite part of life. This October it would have been 45 years of marriage to the one she called “her hero.” When it came to the grandkids, her reach extended just that much further and lovingly took the role of Nana that will forever be cherished in their hearts. Rebecca was a devote Catholic and trusted fully in faith and the love Jesus has for each of us. We saw this through her years of service for the church and elementary school here at St. Peter’s. Through this faith she taught the importance of hard work, integrity and compassion. Although the end came far too quickly and her absence is missed every moment, Rebecca lives on in her husband Chuck, daughter’s Becca (Ryan) Ray, Chasmine (Taylor) McIntosh and her grandchildren Easton, Oliver, Emery, Natalie and Kennedy. Paul Ellis Holdaway
June 3, 1942 – June 13, 2024 Paul Holdaway, a man of the land and a craftsman of the highest order, was born into the simplicity and strength of a dairy farm in Vineyard, Utah. His roots ran as deep as the values he carried throughout his life: integrity, dedication, and a quiet fortitude that defined his very essence. In 1967, Paul ventured west to Santa Clara, California, and soon after, made his home in Santa Cruz, where the splendor and strength of the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains met the beauty and depth of the Pacific Ocean, echoing the depth of his character. A cabinet maker by trade, his hands shaped more than wood; they built a legacy of resilience and beauty that stood the test of time until his retirement in 1997. Upon retirement he became a familiar face of the Seacliff Beach flats area, often found immersed in one of his many books or strolling along the trails, taking in the scenic splendor of Monterey Bay. Paul was the embodiment of the “Strong Silent” type, a pillar of reliability whose work ethic was relentless. His love for his family was his guiding force, never missing a chance to support his children and grandkids in all their endeavors – he never missed a school activity or sporting event and was always willing to help others in need whenever he could. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carole Pagan Holdaway; his mother, Clista and his father, Ellis D. Holdaway; his son, Gregory Paul Holdaway; his brother, Kay Holdaway; and his sister, Lorna (Holdaway) Bevan, Paul’s memory is cherished and kept alive by those he leaves behind. He is survived by his son Daric Holdaway and his wife Lisa, and grandson Benjamin Paul Holdaway; his son Damon Holdaway and granddaughters Emerald (Holdaway) Marston and Jasmine Dean; Jill Bridgeman Weiss, whom he welcomed as a daughter from an early age, and her son’s Cody and Logan who dubbed him “Grumpo” due to his stoic nature. His brothers Sherm Holdaway (and wife Kathy) and Ned Holdaway (and wife Suzan); his sisters Marilyn (Holdaway) Leetham and Nan Holdaway; and a loving assembly of cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends also mourn his passing. In 2022, Paul found serenity in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his son Daric, daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandson Ben, embracing the joy of his final days. Paul departed this world peacefully at home on June 13, 2024, surrounded by his family. Paul lived a simple and humble life, and he requested that no services be held. Cheryl L. Skaggs (Gesch)
March 18, 1951 – June 13, 2024 Cheryl was born to Elmer and Martha Gesch on March 18, 1951. Cheryl had one sibling, a brother, Norman Gesch. They resided at 2617 N.W. 7th St, Lincoln, NE. This was where Cheryl was raised. Later Cheryl moved to 3400 N 11th St. Cheryl and LeRoy were married October 10th, 1987, in Lincoln, NE at St. Lukes Church. Cheryl’s father passed in 1999 and once Cheryl’s father passed, Cheryl and LeRoy decided to have a new home built on the same land where she was raised. Cheryl and Leroy had an apartment put in the basement and that is where Cheryl’s mother lived until she passed in 2002. Cheryl passed at her home surrounded by family. Cheryl attended Lincoln High School and graduated from there in 1969. Cheryl had multiple jobs through her life. Some of the jobs included working at Russel Stover’s Candy, Mass Merchandisers, Square D, Spectronics, Heritage Warranty Insurance and she was also a paralegal. Cheryl retired from Nationwide Insurance. The most important thing to Cheryl was family. Cheryl loved to spend time with family. Cheryl’s family was everything to her. This is something that she instilled into her daughter. Cheryl always told her daughter that “Money would come and go but family does not. You must take time to make memories.” There were always Sunday family dinners, family vacations. And once a year, in the fall the family would go to Nebraska City for a picnic and go to the apple orchards. When Cheryl was not spending time with her family you could find her cooking, baking, and canning. When it came to cooking Cheryl never bought anything frozen. Everything was made from scratch. At holidays there was never any bread or pies or anything that was bought from the store. Everything was made from scratch and made by hand. This is something that she passed down to her daughter and granddaughter. When she was not cooking or baking, she was canning or working in the garden. All the things she loved to do was passed down to her from her mom and dad. Cheryl would always welcome people into her home, and she made them feel like family. Cheryl did not have to say anything about how she felt because you could always tell it from her face. There were times she would try to hide how she felt but, it never worked for the people that really knew her. Cheryl instilled morals and values into her daughter, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. A lot of them would not be who they are today without her guidance and advice. Cheryl was the glue that kept the family bonded together. Cheryl loved her husband LeRoy, more than words could ever describe. He was her hope and strength. Leroy always knew what Cheryl needed or wanted and provided that for her. A love like there’s, you do not find in today’s world. Survived by her husband LeRoy Skaggs. Her brother Norman Gesch. Her daughter Tracy Dittbrenner and her fiancé Brent Nemnich. Stepdaughter Sonny Eppenbach-Skaggs and her husband Stacey Eppenbach, Step Daughter Sarah Skaggs-Mostek, Grandson Michael Dittbrenner and partner Aubrie Eberspacher. Grand daughter Melissa Blazek and her partner Brandon Pollock. Grandson Jacob Dittbrenner. Grandkids Ryan, Elizabeth, and Logan. Cheryl’s nephews and their wives. And six grandkids, and eight great-grandkids, plus one on the way. Cheryl was preceded in death by her son Troy Crosby. Her parents Elmer and Martha Gesch. Her sister-in-law Sandy Gesch and her niece Christine Michelle Gesch. And, multiple Aunt’s and Uncles.
