Bartell, Merlin W. 11/28/44-12/20/18 He is survived by his wife Marlene. Children: Micah Bartell Leander TX, Cheryl (Jacob) Widhalm Lincoln NE, Aaron Bartell Lincoln NE. Grandchildren: Bryson, Shea, Shelby, Kelson, Jameson and Aislynn. Brothers: George (Jeanne) Bartell Des Plaines IL, Eugene (Karen) Bartell Baltimore MD, John (Sherrie) Bartell Sutton NE and sisters-in-law Elizabeth Bartell Sutton NE. Nieces and nephews. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and brother Thomas Bartell. The family thanks the HoriSun Hospice team of Dr Bleicher, the nurses, assistants & social workers for their excellent care & assistance. No service.
Promoted to heaven after a brief illness of pancreatic cancer. Merlin was born in Red Wing MN to Rev. George and Lola (Smith) Bartell. He spent his boyhood in Fredericksburg IA. He was a graduate of Sutton NE high school, UNL and was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. On December 21, 1974 he married Marlene A Hennings in Omaha NE. He retired from Lincoln City Libraries. Merlin was an avid student of the Bible and from the age of 28 he looked forward to his soon coming Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

David Brooks was a chemistry and technology teacher. He pioneered at the introduction of technologies such as television, precursors to PowerPoint, the World Wide Web, and computer-assisted instruction during traditional teaching. He was among the first in the world to offer courses that were entirely Web-based. He taught thousands of college undergraduate students, dozens of Masters students, and mentored almost 40 graduate students through to doctoral degrees. Although not a world traveler, Dave was proud that he had spent at least one full day in each of the 50 states. “Each state has something beautiful.” He thoroughly enjoyed driving around the US. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Eileen Lizabeth. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 54 years, brother Michael, son Gregory Daniel, and two grandsons. Cremation. No services. Craig Allen Burklund, 49, of Osceola passed away on November 13, 2018. Graduate of Geneva High School in 1987. Preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Survived by his best friend, his dog Buddy of 16 years, loving brothers and sisters, brother-in-law, niece, and many friends. The family would like to thank everyone who made Craig’s life fulfilling. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

LaVerne J. Bish (Turner) , 96 , died peacefully November 22, 2018 following a short illness. LaVerne was born March 3, 1922, the youngest of eleven children of Charles and Anna Turner in Trumbull, NE. After graduating from Trumbull High School, she trained at Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, NE. In 1944 she married Cyril Bish of Giltner, NE, her husband of 62 years. She also entered the Nurse Corp of the U.S. Army in 1944 and served until 1945. The family moved to Lincoln in 1954 where they raised two daughters. From 1965 to 1987, she was the Director of Nursing at Milder Manor Nursing Home. LaVerne was passionate about service to others, and she touched many people’s lives. She volunteered at the Lied Center and Bryan Health Medical Center. She was also active in the Presbyterian church, PEO, UNL Faculty Women’s Group and the Fifty-Fifty Bridge Club, and served on committees at the Grand Lodge at the Preserve, where she resided until her death. She is preceded in death by her husband, Cyril, her parents and all of her ten siblings. She is survived by her daughters Musa Campbell of Cincinnati, Sara Evenson of Lincoln and granddaughter Madelynne Campbell of Cincinnati. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, November 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln.
