Zane Randall Maltas

featured image

Zane Randall Maltas was born on December 4, 2001, to William and Ranelle Maltas. He passed away surrounded by his family on October 7, 2023 after a brief, but incredibly courageous battle with cancer.

Zane was highly involved with the Lincoln music and theater scene. He was a member of the “Young Lions” Honor Jazz Ensemble for 2 years, and a member of Varsity Jazz at Lincoln Southwest playing bari sax, as well as Wind Ensemble and Concert Bands on French Horn at Lincoln Southwest High School.

Zane was very involved with Silver Hawk Theatre at Lincoln Southwest, as well as local theatre groups, appearing many times on stage, behind the scenes, and in the orchestra pit for many local productions. His favorite roles included: Pugsley in “The Addams Family,” at TADA and “The Lorax/Vlad Vladikoff” at Pinewood Bowl in their production of Seussical.

In March of 2023, Zane had the opportunity to play French Horn in the pit orchestra for one of his absolute favorite musicals: “Sweeney Todd” at Lincoln Community Playhouse. Zane also loved to do Improv Theatre at Lincoln Southwest.

Zane was loved by his entire family, including his brother, Ian Maltas, his Grandmother Bernice Luthy of Aurora, Uncle Randy Luthy of Aurora, his Aunt Rhonda (Luthy) Bithell and Uncle Doug Bithell of Omaha, and cousins Jared Bithell and Derek Bithell, Aunt Karen (Maltas) Moore and Uncle Jim Moore of Wichita, and cousins Jarod Moore and Stephanie (Moore) Linn.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Carl I. and Corinne Maltas, Aunt Carla Maltas, Great Grandfather Fred Rauert, and Grandfather Roger Luthy.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Southwood Lutheran Church on Thursday, October 19th at 11am. Lunch will follow in the Fellowship Hall that will include musical performances from those who Zane loved most, in tribute to his amazing spirit.

Memorials will go to the family and will be disbursed to TADA Theatre, Lincoln Community Playhouse and Pinewood Performing Arts, as well as to a memorial scholarship in Zane’s Honor which will be established by the NU Band Alumni Association.

We learned of Zane’s passing through a mutual friend that was on the improv team with Zane at LSW. My son, Luke was in Lincoln Boys Choir with your sons and was also one of the 12 newsies as Zane played Pulitzer at the LSW production of Newsies. Zane was an absolute shining star at the role of Pulitzer, the cast were extremely lucky to have him! Our deepest condolences to you and your family, we can’t stop thinking about all of you. With many prayers, Luke & Lisa Peterson

Zane was one of my first friends when moving to Nebraska. I was really Introverted and sad all the time till I met him. He brought a huge smile to everyone’s faces and has been one of the greatest collected and humble people I’ve ever known. It hurts to see that you’re gone. I’ll miss you Zane, love you lots.
