It is with both sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Ken Major, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and friend. Ken left this world on July 10, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of his cherished family.

Born on June 16, 1939, in Fullerton, Nebraska, Ken was the son of John and Emma Lee Major. From a young age, Ken displayed a remarkable passion for learning and sports, a dual interest that would shape his life and career. He graduated from Madison High School in 1957, where he was celebrated as an all-state athlete by the Omaha World Herald. Ken pursued his love for education at Nebraska Wesleyan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1961, followed by two Masters degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Specialist degree from Wayne State College.

Ken’s professional journey was defined by his dedication to education and his students. A lifelong educator, Ken devoted over 32 years to teaching, coaching, and mentoring, including 16 impactful years as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. His soft-spoken nature and genuine interest in others, particularly in the realm of sports, endeared him to students and colleagues alike. Ken was not just a teacher; he was a guiding light, whose kindness, honesty, and generosity left an indelible mark on countless lives.

Ken’s personal life was a testament to love and family. On June 11, 1961, he married Kathryn Loree Moon in Kearney, Nebraska. Together, they embarked on a journey of 67 wonderful years, blessed with three daughters, and filled with love, laughter, travels, and a shared passion for cheering on the Nebraska Huskers. Ken’s love for sports extended beyond the professional sphere, as he was an avid fan, especially of basketball and Nebraska football. His greatest joy, however, came from spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren, whom he adored.

Ken was a devoted member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and actively participated in the South Sioux City Optimist Club, reflecting his commitment to community and service. His life was a tapestry woven with faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to helping others reach their potential.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Lee Major; his beloved daughter, Kristen; and his siblings, Esther, Jack, and Norma. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Katy, of Lincoln; his daughters, Caroline Major of Lincoln and Jean Ackerman of Beaver Lake, along with her husband Troy; grandsons Eric Andrews of Des Moines and Evan Andrews of Omaha; granddaughter Sophie Ackerman of Beaver Lake; and great-grandson Greyson Andrews of Des Moines.

A service to honor and celebrate Ken’s remarkable life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 16, 2026, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. There will be a gathering of family and friends at 10:00 a.m. at the church. The family invites all who knew Ken to join them in remembrance and to share stories that reflect his enduring legacy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family for their preference.

Ken Major’s life was a shining example of devotion, kindness, and integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished memories, and a community forever enriched by his presence. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
