Judith Joan (Herr) Tenney

featured image

January 3, 1940 – June 26, 2025

Judy was born in Seattle, Washington, to Melvin and Phyllis (Tebow) Herr. She was raised in Seattle and attended Cleveland High School. On December 28, 1956, she married Roy M. Tenney.

When Roy became a Quality Control Inspector for Boeing, working on the Minute Man Missile System, they moved every 6 months to a year, cumulating in over 50 moves in 9 states. Judy made a home by connecting with the local library, Episcopal Church, and Girl Scouts. They returned home annually to Seattle to visit relatives and long time friends. Over the years, she and Roy also made five visits to Turkey, visiting their youngest daughter and family.

Judy was an avid letter writer and sent birthday and Christmas cards every year to many family and friends. She threw birthday parties for each daughter every year. She had an expressive voice and her reading aloud is a precious memory.

Judy was excellent at embroidery and embellished tea towels, hankies, pillowcases, and tablecloths. You could always tell if it was hers, with her vibrant colors and perfect stitches. She loved fabric and 5 matching sundresses one summer are a fond remembrance.

Judy learned candy making and calligraphy. Her greatest creative joy was gardening, especially roses. She joined the National Rose Society and became a Master Gardener. She and Roy joined the Audubon Society and enjoyed bird watching. Judy had a lovely singing voice and participated in church choirs from high school through later life. She was involved in Cursillo, Kairos Prison Ministry, and was a Hospice volunteer several of the places they lived.

After Roy retired, they RVed for 5 years before settling down in Huntsville, Texas, where she lived for 20 years. Roy and Judy were very active at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, a very loving community that supported them through Roy’s death and her difficult decision to relocate.

A few years after Roy’s death, Judy moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be near family. She went to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and was a member of the choir.

Judy’s family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Yankee Hill, Tabitha Harbor House, and Hospice for the kind, loving and expert care she has received in her last 2 years.

Judy is survived by her 4 daughters: Glory Kosmatka (Steve) of Grayslake, IL, Sheryl Murray (Rob-Roy) of Lincoln, NE, Susan Hernandez (Martin) of Edmond, OK, and Natalie Konutgan (Behnan) of Yalova, Turkey.

Her siblings: Jennifer Grace of Kent, WA, Robert Herr (Nimfa) of Bremerton, WA, and Lucie Clemons (Donny) of Adelanto, CA.

Her grandchildren: Andrew Murray (Laura) of Memphis, TN, Bethany Bettenhausen (Matt) of Lincoln, NE, Laura Hernandez of Brooklyn, NY, Anna Hernandez of Warwick, RI, Mikael Konutgan (Dorothea) of Seattle, WA, Kristofer Konutgan and Lukas Konutgan, both of Bellingham, WA.

7 great grandchildren: Felicity, Andrea, Clarence, Ian, Murray, Damian, and baby due July 2025.

Brother-in-law Bob Tenney (Nicki).
Nieces and Nephew: Terese, Mary, Sandy, Rhonna, Bobby, Kristen, Bekky, and Sierra.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her parents, her stepmother Lynette Herr, and her brother, Melvin Herr, Jr.

Judy was a sweet gem! I loved her lively and caring nature, her love for God, Family and the Earth. She’s earned much Rest in Peace to sing with God’s choir of angels!
Love in Christ to all of Judy’s Family. Marisa Wight of St. Stephen’s Episcopal of Huntsville Tx.

Judy was a loving friend to so many of us at St. Stephen’s Huntsville. We have missed her in her pew and choir since she moved. Judy will forever remain in our hearts and memory,

My husband, Bob, and I knew Judy and Roy from St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Huntsville, TX. Judy was quite active at church. She lead the drive to recycle there. After Roy’s death, she bought a battery operated lawnmower and couldn’t figure out how to run it. We went to her house and after an hour or so of all of us looking at it, finally realized that the battery was upside down! Judy will be much missed by all who knew her.
