Jean Ann Fischer

featured image

September 11, 1968- February 12, 2025

Jean Ann Fischer, age 56, of Denton, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025 in her home with her family by her side after her three year struggle with ovarian cancer. Born in Friend, Nebraska, on September 11, 1968, she was the daughter of Harvey and Joan Weber, and was the youngest of seven children. Jean Ann was a radiance of kindness and intelligence, and she spread warmth and love to all who knew her. But most of all, she wanted people to be kind to one other, above all else.

Jean Ann met the love of her life, Jerry, twice before they became husband and wife. Her first meeting with Jerry was as a little girl, sitting side-by-side sharing laughter over a litter of puppies at the county fair. Little did she know, Jerry would take a chance and ask her out for a movie and pizza many years later while she was in high school, and soon thereafter, they fell in love and eventually married on August 5, 1989. They moved twice before they built their forever home on an acreage between Lincoln and Denton in 1999. All the while, she cherished her time with her family and found joy in the simple things. She loved to read and taught her two kids, Jackson & Carson, to love books as well. You would find her most mornings reading scripture and writing her daily devotions while holding a cup of coffee and watching the birds outside, while one of her beloved four-legged family members comforted her and sat beside her. She was an avid reader, with a deep appreciation for learning, never satisfied with what she already knew, she was always searching for advanced techniques and knowledge. Her unwavering faith in Christ provided her with strength and comfort throughout her life.

Jean Ann dedicated many years of her professional life to serving others as a registered dietitian at Bryan LGH Hospitals in Lincoln, Nebraska. For the past decade and a half, she shared her expertise and passion for nutrition and dietetics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she served in a variety of roles, including Registered Dietitian, Human Sciences Program Leader, Extension Educator, and Nutrition Education Program Director. Jean Ann also served in numerous college lecturer and adjunct professor roles, teaching college students at various institutions in the state of Nebraska. While her contributions were significant, Jean Ann remained remarkably humble about her work, finding deep fulfillment in her role and the positive impact she had on countless lives. She valued her work immensely and continued to contribute where she could until the very end. She left a lasting impact on her colleagues and her community, and all who knew her were touched by her dedication, compassion, and love.

Jean Ann will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Fischer; her son, Jackson Fischer; her daughter, Carson Fischer, her mother Joan Weber, her father Harvey Weber, her sisters Mary Jo Weber, Diane Odoski, Karen Horky, and her brothers Dale Weber, Mike Weber, and John Weber, and her loyal beagle, Goose. Jean Ann’s song may have ended, but her melody will forever linger on. In keeping with Jean Ann’s final wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Instead, her desire was for a private celebration of life with her family, a time for intimate remembrance and shared love. All that knew her, also knew that she was a woman of remarkable grace with a truly humble spirit. She sought no accolades or public pronouncements, but rather a quiet gathering of those closest to her to honor her life and her unwavering faith in Christ. She wished for her family to grieve together, to find comfort in one another, and to cherish the many memories and love they shared with her. Her family of four took many joyous vacations, and she wanted her ashes to be spread in a special place, a place that held memories of togetherness and love for her family, and one that would show the grace of God every day by way of a vibrant sunrise and glowing sunset. She loved a beautiful sunrise and sunset, and would always call on you to hurry, and see it for yourself.

In her own words, “I am strong in my faith and my trust in God, I have a husband I love, many friends at work and at home, and two of the most amazing humans that God has allowed me to birth, raise, and get to know as adults. I was also blessed to get to know my children’s eventual life partners, and I also got to love three dogs along the way that looked out for me and brought me smiles and comfort, all the while completing our family. I was blessed to have parents who gave me a safe and loving home, and siblings to keep me grounded and to know that I am never alone. And at the end of my life I was blessed with many doctors, nurses, aids, techs, and their staff, so many caring people that gave so much and helped me with my journey home. This is the day that the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen. I love you all, Jean Ann.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jean Ann’s memory to ovarian cancer research. May a cure be found for this devastating disease, so that someday soon no other families will have to endure the heartbreak, loss, and indescribable pain that ovarian cancer brings. Donations can be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance through UNL Memorial, or by going to https://ocrahope.org/get-involved/ways-to-give/make-a-donation/.

I worked with (or for ) Jean Ann at the University. She was a true servant leader , she led with such grace , strength, kindness and peace. She taught hard work and work life balance. She always had time for everyone, and she would pick up the phone on vacation to celebrate your success or handle and issue, …….and she always responded with “we’ll work it out “ I was truly blessed to be led by her and I will miss her ….
Her spirit of service to others will continue to live on in the good work she started and by all those she touched at the University.
….. prayers for the Fischer family

Jean Ann was a special person that I was blessed to know by being on our Women Supporting Women (WSW) Steering Committee. She always had just the right thing to say and our group found much peace in getting together for monthly lunches and just strategizing about ways to support Women Faculty at UNL. Jean Ann never told us about her struggles.. she always had a good advice and wonderful suggestions and the best laugh. I am so much better for knowing her and wished there would have been more time. She was just lovely. My blessing to her husband and children in this difficult time.

It is no secret that the source of Jean Ann’s love of life and love of others was grounded in Jesus. Although I didn’t know Jean Ann well, I was always struck by how she treated others with honor and dignity. There was a quiet peace about her life that I now realize was the result of spending time with the Father regularly, and learning from Him the wisdom of the ages. It’s clear from reading Jean Ann’s own words above that her prayer for all of us was that we would know the unconditional love of the Father – as lived through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection – as she did. Thank you Jean Ann for leaving this world a brighter place through your presence.
