May 5, 1935 – June 23, 2025

Janet was born in New Berlin, Illinois to Otto August Niess and Katherine Pearl Haggard.

Jan was a dear friend and lived a wonderful, active and full life right up until her passing on June 23, 2025.

She attended Grand Island High School (class of 1953), the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical School Hospital in Omaha for Neuro radiology and Radio isotopic Technology.  Later she attended graduate school earning a master’s degree in educational psychology.

Jan’s interests were in the medical field, domesticated animals, wildlife, psychology, reading and music. She helped organize and operate the PALS group, a rescue, spay/neuter and adoption organization in Lincoln.

Jan loved, cared for and buried three husbands:

She married Charles “Charlie” Newell M.D. in 1965 and moved with their family to Lincoln where he accepted a position with Bryan Hospital Radiology. After he died in 1994, Janet married Nathanial “Bud” Scott, M.D. who died in 2000. In 2007 she married Charles “Chuck” Dreesen who died in 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Otto, Pearl & Esther; her husbands: Charlie, Bud, Chuck and her granddaughter: Jocelyn.

She is survived by children: Sarah (Todd) Jones, Hal (Beth) Newell, grandchildren: Justin Jones, Ashley Drake, Charlie Newell and Lindsey Newell and great grandchildren: Charlie, Ellianna, Sutton, Jones & Brooks.

As Janet would so lovingly say about her loved ones who passed: There is a new star lighting up the night sky since you have left us. You are reunited with your loved ones and playing beautiful music.

Rest well dear one.

Janet, you are loved always!
