Jeffry “Schwep” Mark Eckman
Jeffry “Schwep” M. Eckman, 63, of Waverly, NE passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 4th, 2020. Jeffry was born on February 10th, 1957 in Fall City, NE to Hubert G. Eckman and Pauline (Boman) Maughan. He graduated high school in 1975 from Lincoln Southeast then immediately enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corp, followed by a career as supply sergeant with Nebraska Army National Guard. After retiring from his military duties, he then went to work for INS/ Homeland Security Division until his death.
A true patriot, Jeff had strong core values and loved serving his country alongside his many close friends. He was well-respected and loved by those whose lives he touched. Family was very important to Jeff, although he had no children of his own he doted on all of his nieces & nephews and had a deep love for gift-giving, especially at Christmas. Always the quiet one, he could usually be found with his nose in a book, or heading off to a movie. He also enjoyed attending auctions, playing cards with his Wednesday night buddies. In his younger days, he was an avid member of a co-ed softball team and also refereed girls’ volleyball games.
Jeff gave generously throughout his life, through his community, important military causes, and several charitable organizations helping preserve wildlife, trees, etc.
Jeff is survived by his five siblings Scott (Kim) Eckman of Duluth, MN, Kerry ”Toby” Ryan (Mark Homes) of Raymond, NE, Stacy Maughan (Beverly Rettenmaier) of Omaha, NE, Linda Maughan-Hager of Waverly, NE, Lisa (Tony) Ruhge of Lincoln, NE; half-siblings Daisymae Brayton and Mark Eckman; 10 nieces & nephews Nicholas, Jessica, Zachary, Dylan, Casey, Amelia, Emma, Eliza, Madison & Mason; as well as 8 great-nieces; nephews; cousins; and his beloved cat, Boo.
Jeffry was preceded in death by parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Graveside Services at Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City NE. Saturday June 13, 2020 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon.

We are sorry to hear the news of Jeff’s passing. All though it’s been a long time since seeing Jeff we also feel the loss. I remember well when we all neighbors on Harwood St. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family’s during these tough times. Mark and Donna
One of the nicest persons to bless my life. Had so much fun with city rec, club volleyball, reffing volleyball, and playing wally ball. Very generous and giving soul with lots of heart. So sad to hear of his passing.
I had the privilege to work directly with Jeff for the last year and half. He was an amazing person. Always up for helping anyone in anyway that he can. He made my transition to a new line of work so much less painful. I liked talking about movies with him when I had a chance. He will be greatly missed. RIP Jeff.
My deepest sympathies to each of you. It was an honor to work with Jeff. He was always kind and shared his wisdom so humbly. It was fun to hear all his great finds from the auctions that he attended along with what gifts were going to whom–flamingos for his sister, a camera for his nephew, etc. The movies he saw, the books he was reading. He will be greatly missed. May all the good memories bring you comfort.
I met Jeff about 22 months ago and from the first time I ever talk with him he made me feel like an old friend. I will miss you Jeff but I truly believe it’s until we meet again.
Just reading the words of his memory, it’s so good to see that he was surrounded in life by so many loved ones. I didn’t know much about Jeff, but I was a colleague of his for many years. Though quiet, he was very kind — and always had time to help others when needed. In life, one always remembers those who have affected their life in some way. Jeff selflessly helped me (and many others) through the years, and I owe him my gratitude for where I am today. He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Semper Fi and God Bless.
We are sad to hear that Jeff passed. He was wonderful to work with, kind and giving. He often found items of interest at auctions. Some of those items are in our home, and will remind us of him always. We will miss him.
