Mark A. Hinman

Mark Alan Hinman passed away on December 30, 2025, the same day he began his life in 1953. Mark lost his battle with cholangiocarcinoma cancer after living a full life. He was predeceased by his Mother Margaret Isabela Hinman (Burke) born in Bancroft, Nebraska, and his Father Jack Leroy Hinman, born in Milford, Nebraska. He is survived by his older brother George Burke Hinman, who lives in Potomac, Maryland and his sister-in-law Jacqueline Crenca Hinman, who was born in Silver Spring Maryland.
Mark was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, one day before the end of the year 1953. He attended Prescott Elementary School, Irving Junior High School, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1972. Mark attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln and graduated with a B.A., majoring in Political Science, in 1976. While at the University of Nebraska, Mark was awarded an academic scholarship sponsored by Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corporation, which had recently opened a manufacturing plant in Lincoln, and spent a year in Tokyo, Japan, studying at Sophia University, the oldest Catholic university in Japan.
After graduation, while working for the Burlington Northern Railroad, Mark began taking classes in accounting and finance at Southeast Community College. After a couple of years of study, and without obtaining an accounting degree, he took and passed the Certified Public Accountant exam and became a CPA.
Mark was employed by the State of Nebraska for 34 years, including 28 years as an auditor, and from 1999 until his retirement in 2018, as Deputy Director of the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission, which audited Nebraska political candidates and campaigns.
Mark was an avid reader of books and newspapers, a was a frequent attendee of live music at The Zoo Bar and other locals where live music was played in Lincoln and Omaha. He had a wonderful group of friends in Lincoln and enjoyed their company.
Mark enjoyed visiting his brother George in San Diego, particularly during the winter, and Panama, when George lived in Panama City Panama, also when the hawk was howling out of the North in Lincoln. While he was in Panama, they flew to Havana, Cuba where they spent a week going to hear to hear Cuban bands play salsa and son music, and visited the local sites, like the Tropicana Night Club, the Museum of the Revolution, and Ernest Hemingway’s home, Finca Vigia. Mark and his friend Tom Ineck had a memorable trip to Ireland, where they had a Guinness or three and a Jameson now and then, chatting up their new Irish friends and listening to local music.
Mark’s life was well-lived, but ended too soon, as many lives do, and his friends will sorely miss his company and friendship, his sharp wit and sense of humor, and his brother George will miss his little brother who accompanied him on their journey through life together for 72 years.

“Another Lincoln High Job Well Done.”
When I first met Mark over fifty years ago, the first thing I noticed was how much he resembled Frank Zappa. Over time we became friends and eventually were housemates on X Street and Walnut Court for a couple of years in the late 1970’s. Mark was a highly intelligent and serious guy, but he also had a wry sense of humor with a definite leaning towards the cynical. I haven’t spoken with Mark in several years and many times as I passed his house on A street, I thought I should stop by for a visit and I now regret not doing so. I just always figured there would be another time. Mark was a good man and a good friend. I have a lot of great memories of him through the years and I will miss him, as will all of his many friends. So long Mark, you were a fine friend and roommate and I’m glad to have known you.
Mark and I grew up in the same neighborhood and when we were younger, sometimes would walk to Prescott or Irving together and sometimes play kick soccer in the street after school. I haven’t seen him for a few years and am sorry for his death. I loved reading his obituary. What an interesting life he enjoyed. I can see him quietly observing but ready with a spot on remark. Blessings.
I remember Mark from the Capitol, Accountability and Disclosure! All great people worked in the office! Smart, kind, and good looking gentleman! RIP Mark, you lead a respectable and great life! Just too short!
