Thomas Roy Lewis

Thomas R Lewis, 77, passed away December 21, 2025, in the loving arms of his family at the Tabitha VA Journey House in Lincoln, Nebraska, after a four-year courageous battle with lung cancer. Born September 8, 1948, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, Tom, was known for his quiet demeanor, strong character, and unwavering commitment to both his family and community. A graduate of Syracuse, Nebraska High School, Tom learned auto repair skills from his father, underneath a tree in their backyard, which later developed into a career landing him with an automotive logistics position as he served honorably in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971.
Upon returning from military service, Tom managed and co-owned several automotive repair facilities in Lincoln and employed dedicated colleagues who became lifelong friends. During his tenure at an auto dealership, he was smitten with the love of his life, Azala “Jo” Loetscher. Being blessed to have known when love was right, the couple eloped and were married on February 16, 1974.
Tom’s greatest joy came from enjoying family times. Many happy family events with siblings and a slew of cousins always kept Tom connected to his roots. Then on April Fool’s Day 1987 a surprising joy befell his heart for the rest of his life, when he and Jo adopted their baby girl, quickly followed in August 1987 with adoption of her older half-brother. Tom took on the joys of becoming a stay-at-home dad for these two little ones, making many cherished memories along the way after moving back to Unadilla in 1993. Tom and Jo retired and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in August 2024.
Tom enjoyed fishing on the Little Nemaha River near Unadilla, a pastime he cherished with his wife, including their honeymoon spent on its banks. Later, his son, Jim, and Tom would invent “the one that got away” big tales to regale after a day at the creek. Nieces and nephews often also shared in these precious times of Tom’s life. Tom will be greatly missed by all.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Leona Lewis; his sister and brother-in-law, Trixy and Russell Ziemann; nephew, Darin Ziemann; grandparents, Roy and Sophie Lemka; uncles, Don Lewis and Lucky Krivokopich; an aunt, Mary Lemka.
He is survived by his wife, Azala Jo Lewis, and their children, Jennifer J. Lewis, and James T. Lewis, all of Lincoln; grandchildren, Brooklyn M. Lewis, Ryder L. Schmidt and Bentley R. Schmidt; siblings, Jerry (Carol) Lewis; Sally (Lloyd Peterson); Jack Lewis; Nancy (Arlan Liesemeyer); aunts, Leota Krivokopich; Violet (Jim Poole); Jane Lewis; uncle, Leonard Lemka; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. on January 17, 2026, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, Unadilla Nebraska, officiated by Pastor Monica Magoola, followed by internment of ashes in Unadilla Cemetery with Honor Guard Presentation and a luncheon following.
The family extends its gratitude to NHO, Dr. Eric Avery and staff, Tabitha Hospice and staff; and a special thank you to Pastor Monica Magoola and Reverend Dr. Robert Magoola for their ongoing love and support. Memorial contributions may be directed to Unadilla Fire & Rescue, Unadilla United Methodist Church and Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

Jo and family, what a great tribute you’ve written for Tom. He was an awesome person and a great neighbor. He lent a helping hand to us on many occasions throughout the years that we lived across the street from you. Thinking of you and your family this time and sending Lord‘s strength and grace to guide you. Unfortunately, we will be out of town during the time of the service but you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Jo and family, I only got to know Tom in later years and that is my loss. He was one of the nicest people I have ever known. Please know my heart is hurting with you but knowing Tom is no longer suffering helps with the sadness. Patsy Tischofer
