Wendi Star Bear

Wendi Bear was born in El Cajon, California, the youngest of seven children. As a young girl, her family moved to Juniata, Nebraska, where she later graduated from Roseland High School in 1981. Over the years, Wendi wore many hats—working in cardio/pulmonary at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, serving as a postal clerk in Hastings, owning a cake decorating business, and becoming an early trailblazer when eBay first emerged, running her own successful online sales business. Later in life, she worked in the insurance field, always adapting and learning as she went.
Learning was a lifelong passion for Wendi. She earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Office Technology–Administrative Assistant from Central Community College in 2003, and later returned to earn a second Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Administration–Accounting in 2010. Her curiosity and drive never faded.
Wendi never met a stranger. Once you became part of her world, she was quick to help in any way she could—tracking down a hard-to-find item at a bargain price, modifying recipes for food allergies, or unexpectedly showing up to clean your house, because, as she often said, “It’s more fun to clean a house that isn’t your own.”
She embodied the spirit of a pioneer woman: fiercely independent, resourceful, and stubborn in the best way. If something needed fixing or building, she grabbed a hammer and drill without hesitation. From shutters and rabbit cages to bathroom remodels and landscaping projects, she found solutions where others saw obstacles. Her practical skills were matched by a wide-ranging knowledge of holistic herbs, home remedies, and just about every rash known to mankind.
In one of the most selfless chapters of her life, Wendi packed up everything she owned and moved back in with her parents to care for her mother after a stroke and onset of dementia. She devoted herself fully to her mother’s care until her passing. During that time, her father was diagnosed with cancer, and Wendi once again rose to the challenge—researching and growing healing foods, blending fruits and vegetables so he could tolerate nourishment during treatments, and finding ways for both of them to still enjoy life. Even in the hardest moments, she looked for light.
Wendi’s sense of humor carried many through dark days. She loved to laugh, tell jokes, and use humor—sometimes dark, sometimes delightfully silly—to ease tension. Inside jokes with her children and grandchildren shaped their own humor, from ridiculous phrases to her firm belief that cake was not just for dessert but made an excellent breakfast, or even cereal, especially when paired with homemade chocolate frosting.
Later in life, Wendi found happiness in the town of Beatrice, where she was excited to finally put down roots. She took great pride in her home, filling it with nautical décor, family photos, and cherished mementos that reflected her personality. She rediscovered her faith and found a welcoming community at Bible Baptist Church, forming meaningful friendships, especially with Pastor Terry and Rachel Anderson.
Animals were always close to Wendi’s heart. Over her lifetime, she cared for countless pets, with her two beloved dogs rarely leaving her side. One of her favorite comforts was curling up under a blanket with her dogs nearby, watching television. Those sweet companions now live on with her daughters.
Wendi leaves behind her four children—Heather, Jerica, Jon, and Jared—her “four superheroes,” who were once a royal pain and eventually turned out to be pretty great. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Dominic, Eva, Sienna, and Hannah. She leaves behind close siblings and cousins who held a special place in her heart, including Carol, Steve, and Denise, along with cherished friends Karen, Laura, Kathy, and Jenn, who were family in every way that mattered. Her children’s strong bond is a testament to the love and stability she provided, even in chaos, boredom, and loneliness.
Wendi was the command center of our lives. Though her passing came far too soon, we take comfort in knowing she is with God. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
